new shield designs

IF and I mean IF. ..one bought some of these for a box of Greeks...how do they 'go on' a domed surface?
Any problems?

The Immortal Miniatures Greeks I bought had a sheet of transfers that all worked very well without a sniff of trouble, except for the single extra large transfer. I anticipated problems with it and tried to snip three little cuts in towards the centre before applying it. The whole thing folded and flapped about so badly I had to ditch it. My fault.

If it was me, I would use MicroSol or Vallejo Decal Fix - makes the decal conform.

If you mean the new LBMS transfers - they'll go on a domed surface perfectly. They are more flexible than the usual waterslide decals.

Yes they'll work on the domed shield perfectly.

That is a very tempting set of transfers with some serious cost implications!!! Summer project I think...what with BD getting all Greek too!
I absolutely believe the transfers work but, can somebody explain how a flat transfer sits over a dome without wrinkles. Is the transfer slightly elastic or summat? Just intrigued by the whole process.
And a bit cross that Warlord are selling them due to the fact its 'distracting'!

I use LBMS transfers a lot. They are quite flexible, and fit 'domed' shields quite well. I've done a few Greeks from 'Magna Graecia' with them, and will be doing more. Think there's the odd one on Aventine's front page.

Hi Carvel.....right well LBM transfers are the rub down type i have used them in Roman shields..the only thing that is tricky is placing them absolutely where you need them because once placed you don't easily get a second go like a waterslide decal.

Your point about dome crinkles and wrinkles brings to mind a more startling point.......Greek Hoplon shields are as everyone knows a wooden dome with a rim covered in a single sheet of thin bronze.....archaeologists have found some examples but no one can yet explain this, how the bronze is folded around the edge on to the back without so much as a crease or fold or tear?????


When I couldn't get the shield transfers I wanted I, of course, resorted to making my own......i wanted all my Immortal miniatures greeks to have the same shield design so settled on an Octopus to match the sail device on my greek ship?
I have no idea what significance the Octopus device has...but i quite like it!
I opted to do this on a clear background so that the shield could be any colour and logo in black would sit on the dome...avoiding any nasty problems with creases!

There's a good guide to shield symbols at http://www.militaryphotos.net/forums/sh ... -Standards. The octopus design was from Euboia (modern Evia), part of the Athenian League (I think!).
