Celtic Standard bearer, SWAP!!!

Postby Biggus Dickus » Thu Feb 02, 2012 5:02 pm

Hi Guys, as some of you may know I'm in the early stages of making a battle display scene for my wife's school (year 3) I have some Romans and plastic celts, metal celtic chieftain, and also this rather cool metal Celtic standard bearer
Image

As you can see he has a severed head in his Right hand....so a bit un PC for little boys and girls so i won't be able to use him in the scene......sadly the battlefield has to be a rather gentlemanly place.......I know, but what can you do? :)

Ideally what i would really like to have is a warlord metal Boudicca/Boadicea, so if anyone has got one of those spare that they don't need and would like to donate for the cause i will send this man in exchange.
Please let me know if you can help.

Add a shield to the hand holding the head so the little mites don't see it?
Cheers,

The head? No problem.

I did a lot of museum work with school kids and also many tours through a medieval church. With stories of skeletons in graves under the benches they had been sitting on. One a victim of murder. They loved it. My hit was the story of the red haired templar knight. (A true one)

Most children are not the cute angels we think they are. They like the horror stories that make me shiver. They go for mummies and monsters. Brute beasts. ;)

Why didn't i think of that...Palm slap to face.......we really do need a palm slap smilie, by the way.

The only problem i can see with adding a shield is that I may have to actually part with cash for Boudica ;)

Hi I.O. I'm with you on this believe me.......Kids love all this gore stuff....they watch a TV programme over here called Horrible Histories....which is based on the extremely popular History books of the same name.....I think you need a set of these ;)....................sadly the issue is with the grown ups.......teachers and of course parents in this case.....Rules are Rules......which unfortunately I have to observe!!!...........I'm all for teaching the facts....sadly life isn't like a disney movie.......well except for "lion king" and "Bambi"...life is a lot like them....but not much like "Sleeping beauty" or "Aristocats" ;) ...maybe if the horrors of war were taught in school there would be fewer people willing to start them!

This is a good debate now. :D
Very wise BD to follow the direction of the school and its policies.(and the mrs!)
Took mine and Clive's armies in for our yr 3 children and set up a diorama for them to look at.
Great fun!
I removed nakedness but left everything else but did not draw attention to it.
THe display was transitory and children made of it what they will.
I bring 1/32 scale Romans for them to play with as well (.....for my money more useful. BUT recognise I'm leaving myself open to 'criticism'. Education is a minefield!!!

The value in big figures is about identifying similar shapes, organising, sorting , placing and of course playing. For the more able give them aconcept of a dice and a ruler and let them make their own rules up...its brilliant seeing the evolving social etiquette and mathematical solutions to their games.
When all's said and done, teaching is brilliant (well worth the grey hairs :D )
ps...sorry for me, myself and I.

Where did you get that mini B.D.? I really like it.

As for the head...I found the perfect paint to give the severed heads I have that 'dead' look!!

I think your best bet for a cheap Boudicia is the WF chariots sprue, they have a female warrior on the sprue I think.

Have to be honest I tend to avoid to many severed heads or gore on my celts because my two lads have quite an interest in my minis. This is because I dont want to encourage their morbifd facination though...

But I wholly agree with BD and IO that kids love to be scared and love a bit of 'horror' the success of Harry potter and Dr Who attest to this.

Your lessons sound cool Carvel, I had a history teacher in middle school who used to let me and a couple of mates sit and paint miniatures in his class room at lunch times. I beleive the traditional physical forms of play, such as playing with toy soldiers etc have a great benefit to children in many ways. I have had great times playing with my youngest with some Airfix WW2 I bought him. Children's ingenuity and imagination is inspiring.

You can have a WF Boudicca with pleasure, BD, but she's nothing like the Warlord version - she's leaning on a Battersea shield, for starters, and is ... more like the Amazons ... er ... statuesque ... ? Can't help with the Warlord version, though ... sorry.
