Love the colouring of the bricks and their texture. How about these photos...

Drumstick, what technique did you use on the bricks?

EDIT: Wow that's strange.. All the replies seem to be lagging. I've been on several times & there was nothing then they suddenly appear when they were posted hours ago. (& had been on earlier) Anywhoo I shall answer your questions!

@Centurion: yep it was a passing thought that in fact worked out.

@carvel: Right'io I'll try and get that effect on the building where it's been hit.

@mike: I used DAS clay (airdrying) and applied a 2mm thick paste to the foamboard. Leave it to dry a little and then go back sculpting in your bricks with your blunt knife. I then used a green sponge thingy for washing up(don't know what you call them, stole it from the sink) and get some texture. For the more drastic bits around the hit & around the bottom (where it wears most) I used some tin foil to get it looking worn.

Here's a quick update:

That is looking superb drumstick. Great method with the brick work, may give it a try. Am watching this with interest as I will want some terrain at some point for my ww2 project.

Cheers guys, it's always great to post on this forum - such an awesome atmosphere :D If you need any tips or explanations on what I'm doing just ask away mike, I look forward to seeing your models too!

Got a little bit more done, but that's it for today since I've got some extra revision to do for a test tomorrow.. I hope the bricks will turn out okay being quite a bit smaller than the trial. I was thinking of doing 5mm bricks (thickness), think that'll work?

The inside is going to consist of 2 floors, the first floor and an attic. Some of the roof will be intact as well, but most of it will be debris. Also going to have a ivory beige inside to represent wallpaper, I shall have a thin coat of plaster which I shall leave to dry before applying the paint. Don't worry about any of the seams or ruff edges (e.g. on the chimney) as it'll all be covered with the DAS clay.

Café Update

Postby Drumstick » Tue Jan 31, 2012 7:57 pm

Here's an update on the café. I got the bricks done & it took a fair amount of time applying the plaster, cleaning any pieces overlapping the windows/doors and adding the bricks. My next step is to add window shutters which will be partially intact..Tell me what you guys think anyway!

Looking good, I like that brickwork effect a lot.

One thing I've found is that if you spin an old pointy-blade scalpel around on a fixed point it drills/cuts a nice little hole that looks a lot like a chipped bullet hole. It's best to use a scalpel where the pointy bit has snapped off a little ... although it may well snapp off while you spin it around anyway!
