Hmmm... I would go for a mid gray, nothing too dark, the green stripe sounds ideal.
As to the logo on the reenactors shield case... I really don't know how much the imperial Romans were into branding all their stuff...but I could well imagine it would have had a name and unit scrawled on to stop pilfering!

@ Dan and Mike...Mid grey it is then...green stripe. Some way of branding the shields (light brown leather) to stop the other cohorts nicking their kit! Twas ever thus in the military!
