Captain Alatriste

Postby Jim » Tue Jan 06, 2009 5:21 pm

G'day All,

I have recently seen the film Captain Alatriste, and it is absolutely fantastic!

Has anyone else seen it?

It stars Ara.. Viggo Mortensen, and is the most expensive Spanish language film ever made.

It is set in the 17thC and goes through Alatriste's involvement in Spain's wars of empire in Europe.

It makes me want to get a terico or five up and running. It very good stuff - especially the fight sequences, where you see swordsmen dashing under the engaged pikemen and causing all sorts of problems.

Cheers,

Jim

Captain Alatriste

I saw the movie in the cinema when it was released here in Spain. Fantastic scenery, costumes and actors. It could have become a great movie, but in my opinion the plot was not very well structured. It was like narrated multiple stories at the same time, dozens of personalities appeared which were not well integrated into the plot and the battle scenes would have required more attention. The tercio only consists of several dozens of men and there are only a handful of French cavalry attacking. With modern computer techniques it should have been easy to produce some mass scenes of the kind produced for "Alexander the Great" or even basic computer animated battle scenes like in the recent "Mongol" movie. So I think it was a lost opportunity. Nevertheless it's a good movie.

Okay well yes thats also all true.EmbarassedLaughing

My wife couldn't watch it because she thought the plot was all over the place and didnt know who was who.

She thinks I was just smitten with ViggoCry

Captain Alatriste

Last summer, I found the french version of the comic book based on the adventures of Capitan Alatriste. It seems to have been published in 2004 in castellano ( Arturo Pérez-Reverte (writer), Carlos Giménez (scriptwriter), Joan Mundet (cartoonist)). The drawings, in black and white, are really superb. It’s a great inspiration to begin to work on spanish scenics.http://www.songe.fr/weblog/images/BDAlatriste.jpgI don’t know if an english version exists and how many comic books have been published.http://www.sceneario.com/Planche_bd_9587_capitaine_alatriste_(le)_tome_1.jpgAnd a portfolio of illustrationshttp://www.joanmundet.com/Cayoediciones%20index/PortaAla.htmlOlivier

I enjoyed it.

Don't think it's available in the US (which is why I brought my copy of the DVD with me)
