Not near where I live but had a fantastic day in Ely, Cambridge shire.
Cromwells house is work a look, whatever you feel about the man, it is worth a look.

The visited the magnificent Norman Cathedral, an amazing structure, awe inspiring.

There is also a decent museum and the City boasts a number of fascinating buildings, including a splendid 16th century Bishops Palace. Check it out if you are in the area.

I'm very local to colchester, which is significant for the Roman period I.e. Boudicaa burning it to to the ground, also the castle is the site of a civil war battle and there is a memorial were to royalst generals where executed, names escape me however.

My sister lives in Malden and I visited her a couple of weeks ago. We went for a wander around the castle, which was quite impressive. They tend to go for all the Roman history, rather than the Civil War, though. I suppose that's because the Romans are of more interest to the schools and kids.

The world's biggest hand-dug well is only about 3 hours from from me!!!

Within half an hours drive I have Portus Adurni (also known as Portchester Castle), Historic Dockyard Portsmouth with the Victory, Warrior and Mary Rose there, all of the forts known as Palmerstons Follies and Royal Armouries Fort Nelson (a mate of mine works there so I might see of I can get a freebie sometime) Royal Hospital Haslar, Submarine Museum with the submarine HMS Alliance, the Naval Cemetary, Grange Airfield from WW2, a couple of pilboxes, St Georges Barracks, HMS St Vincent (now a 6th form college), - absolutely loads to see and do if you love history as much as me!

Think the closest thing of most historical importance near me is probably the Callanish Stones which dates back to around the same time as Stonehenge. Although one thing that differs is that the Callanish Stones span over several miles and are all over the place rather than just a small area. Otherwise there are plenty of old castles up here in Scotland, from ancient medieval ones to 18th century forts to keep the Scots in line.

I did in fact stop off at Hadrians Wall for the first time while poping over to England which was a great experience. Man.. they really were so far ahead of everyone else!

Just bear in mind that if you lot get independence, there'll be no more 'popping over to England'... We're planning to rebuild it.

@Drumstick: The stones at Callanish were much more impressive (IMHO), given their location, than Stonehenge, I thought - though Skara Brae was better still!
@Phil: It's more the return of the Marches and the border troubles that would bother me -the "reivers" use pick-ups and jeeps now, though: it's quite commonplace to hear of cross-border sheep and cattle rustling. Nothing new under the sun ... there's a place near Moffat called the Devil's Beef Tub, there was so much cattle raiding!
