ECW Movies

Postby Correus » Tue Jan 17, 2012 10:11 pm

Hello everyone! :D

Thought I would pic your brains in regard to movies centered around the ECW. I like to watch period specific movies and documentaries while I paint and those dealing with the ECW are lacking in my collection.

Right now, the ONLY movie I have is 'To Kill a King', and I'm in the middle of watching 'Cromwell' and that's online.

So I thought I would see what all of you would suggest. One thing I would as is this....would you PLEASE give your movie a rating of between 1 an 10? !0 would be given to those that are the most historically accurate and 1 for those who you don't even know if the got the dates right!

I will say, I've enjoyed 'To Kill a King', and am enjoying 'Cromwell', but I have no idea how accurate they are.

The only one I have is Cromwell, and Sir Alec Guiness is simply terrific. He carried the movie, although the rebel actor (Sir Richard Harris - shame! shame!) who played the Murderous, Christmas-canceling, Traitor Cromwell does a good job as well.

Of course the Spanish army(?) who plays the extras in the battle scenes are almost as bad as the M48 panzers in Battle of the Bulge!

I still give it 7/10.
Take car. Go to Mum's. Kill Phil - "Sorry." - grab Liz, go to the Winchester, have a nice cold pint, and wait for all of this to blow over. How's that for a slice of fried gold?

yes agree The classic film Cromwell is very watchable.........this is not a movie but it gives an interesting viewpoint into the civil war period......a UK Tv series called the "Devils Whore".......John Sim is a superb actor and is brilliant in this, I would recommend this as a must see to anyone interested in the civil war period.

That's right, there was only four, really enjoyed that series. You might want to look at "The Moonraker" with George Baker (1957), set a couple of years after the ECW but it's still a good romp with the Roundheads and Cavaliers slapping each other about a bit, I always enjoyed it in a switch off and don't get too technical kinda way.

Sure!

If your in the UK I believe this link is the best one for you:

http://www.channel4.com/programmes/the-devils-whore/4od

For all the rest....

http://www.tv-links.eu/tv-shows/The-Devil-s-Whore_29853/

http://michael-fassbender-online.net/media/video/the-devils-whore/

I didn't have any problems with this loading (haven't actually started watching - just tested) but if you do, let me know.

@Stuart - I'll see if I can find that one as well.

Witchfinder General is set between the Civil Wars.
There was a "sequel" to Cromwell but I do not know if it was issued.
By The Sword Divided was a television series. It is available on DVD.

I bought "To kill a king" and now often wish I hadn't: its even less historically accurate than Cromwell and that's saying a lot.

Some of the battle videos/DVDs are good: one on Marston Moor impressed me.

Sorry Correus I posted some answers to this on your other ECW post.
We're woeful in this country for celebrating our own history. AFAIK its just the above mentioned films/TV series for arguably the most important period in British history. Not even much in the way of historical fiction!

I once saw a "whats wrong with the film Cromwell article in a historical journal. It was in bullet points and still ran to 3 A4 pages. Including the major battle being in the wrong order and Cromwell appearing at all of them. But its a fun film. I love the Witchfinder General which is probably the most actrate to historical goings on but ignore the costume, it is bloomin dreadful. I cant remember the By The Sword Divided but loved it as a kid. There is a 30 yrs war one from the 70s called The Last Valley that is quite jolly,. Problem is they are all old and low budget so the costume is pretty naff. I confess to hateing The Devils Whore. Utter tosh historically and iffy costume. Some of the made for TV history channel stuff has been decent of late. Mostly films of the period make me shout at the telly tbh being a nerd for the costume and military history of this period to a ridiculous extent.
