It was larger, giving the often non armoured late Roman infantry better protection. Many claim financial reasons for the change in equipment but that's wrong. The quality of swords and helmets was still very good. The long Spatha is a weapon that I would claim to be superior to the gladius. The quality of the other ranks swords was outstanding. Surely no cheap items.

The main reason was that the army had to be more mobile.

3rd/4th century Romans lost not more often than the Republicans or early Imperials.
