New Germanics!

Postby Suetonius Paullinus » Sat Dec 31, 2011 12:27 am

Wow, those sculpts look awesome :o
They will definitely find their way into my collection.
How will they fit in with the plastics sizewise?
And can Mr Saleh do some Britons as well, pretty please????

Cheers

Steve has matched them to the plastics and there will be a revamped version of the box as a result.

Hmm, seeing a new metal Germanic range announced made me :) . But a look and :? .

They are the typical wargaming barbarians with lots of fur and some Celtic additions like insigia and instrument. Roman monuments show a different style of clothing with fabrics instead of the animal hides. Tacitus Germ. 17 about furs is not to be confirmed from the monuments and archaeological evidence for furs in graves is scarce. In Denmark dog fur caps are found and bear claws from some Germanic graves seem to indicate furs but they may be for the "bed" of the dead.

Modern reconstructions of Germanic warriors are very different from the wood oger types. The Trajan and the Marcus column and other monuments show no fur clad barbarians but men clad in cloth from a rural society.

Krierer "Antike Germanenbilder" 2004 and other special publications may be too academic. But the Strassmeir / Gagelmann publication "Das Heer des Arminius" from 2009 would be a good source for a sculptor who likes to produce a more realistic army.

Bloody Internet Explorer, typed and entire reply, then stuff crashed and have to start all over again!
No time for that now though, but in summary:
Less fur (see I.O.; reserve fur for animal-cloak wearing wolf/bear warriors), more practical hairstyles (this gets before your eyes, either suebian knot as current models have, or move the tail a bit further to the back, or indeed loose because it's just as impractical, but looks less stupid), different bow (that thing is incredibly thick for any kind of bow, besides I think Germanics used something of a more longbowsish apppearance: thinner and long).
Then perhaps non-fur cloaks for the Germanic (tm) look. And while obviously planned, way more different heads. These all look like twins.
Rather disappointed as well, though these are of course still WIPs...

Well you cant please everyone i guess :( I think they look ok and after all they are only a starting point for now so we may see other variants 8-) I think warlords are working in the right direction and something needs to be done with the germanic range as it is rather lacking in the webstore at the momment. They fit the hairy barbarian profile quite well i thought  So lets wait and see everyone im sure all critisisms are taken in by WG and after all at least they are always bringing out new ranges :D
Once you get them running, you can stay on top of them, and that way a small force can defeat a large one every time

Funny that most 28mm Wargaming Germanics still look like the reconstructions from a time that did all British Celts with Battersea shield and Vikings with horn helmets.
Could it be a little ........ ;)

Aargh, beat me to it.
As I would've liked to have said in my first post, and was about to now, all I am asking for is a bit less of this:
(didn't have similarily suited germanic pictures, so a viking comparison will have to do)

And a bit more of this:

Yeah, the first one is reckognizable as a viking. But that doesn't mean he's what a viking would've looked like.
Tis just constructive criticism, as I know WG can release accurate and good looking models, and I just hope they will do so again.
