THanks for the link my Canadian Friend.

I have actually visited that site on numerous occasions and is brilliant . I do fancy doing a Candian force eventually . I have never been so hooked on a period like this before. My front living room remsembles a Russian tank factory in miniature  No room for the Christmas tree yet ! I could hang my tanks from it as tree decorations

He also has Russian Cold War OOB - and they are great. I used to have a decent sized Russian Cold War force in micro-armour from GHQ. I feel your Russian pain! Keep the pravda, comrade!
Take car. Go to Mum's. Kill Phil - "Sorry." - grab Liz, go to the Winchester, have a nice cold pint, and wait for all of this to blow over. How's that for a slice of fried gold?

After gaming Point Blank yesterday, WW2 can be cheap depending on what you game with. Squad size actions with various support weapons can be just as fun as having a larger force and still feel and achieve the required outcomes.

Add some extra gamers to each side and you have a fantastic looking game.

Cheers,

I appreciate your input Helen but at our club we do things on a massive scale.

The last KGN game we had at the store /club was played on a massive board . I think it was 18x12 and there was something in the region of 150 German tanks against a similar number of Allied tanks. Normally the Allied tanks out number the Germans but this was a "Bulge" game where the Germans were doing the attacking.

Games of this sort of scale are almost impossible to do in 28mm but I appreciate large skirmish games can be done with a number of players on each side, but at end of the day we are a set of treadheads at our club. I did try and pass a motion at the club to change the name from Bolton Vikings to Bolton Treadheads but was thrown out by the Ancient players!

No probs CW. Glad you guys enjoy the larger type of gaming. It must be very impressive to see.

There is a wider variety of skirmish rules for WW2 onward, Napoelonic and Ancients tend to need signifcantly more models - I do ACW and French and Indian War skirmish, but generally ACW needs a lot of minis too. So WW2 is potentially one of the cheapest. Even when doing larger games at 28mm I think it probably works out a little cheaper.

Ah but have you factored in the cost of buildings?

ACW and Naps don't need that many buildings but for cover in WW2 you need buildings!

I picked up a Red Army box, a Maxim Machine gun pack some plastic bases and a Berlin or Bust T34/85 for Rules of Engagement for about $100 USD. That is a playable force in ROE. If I spent another 100 USD I would have a pretty good sized Russian force for ROE in 28mm and certainly enough to play a reasonable game on any 4x6 or 4x8 table using whatever rules. These days a miniature army for around $200 is a good buy IMO.

I make most of my own buildings, so even with those it's still cheaper lol. Plus they aren't necessarily specific to WW2 so have use earlier or later (I've recycled some of my buildings for Chechen War games), gaining some money back ;) Even factoring in purchased buildings it's much cheaper than Grand Tactical Napoleonics lol. Plus if you're playing 15mm large tank battles as you mentioned, then you don't need as many buildings as you would doing 20-28mm skirmish. I can play a decent game of WW2 with around £20 worth of miniatures and a set like NUTS! or Troops, Weapons and Tactics. There's few periods where you can have a game with a distinct period feel as it were for that much...

Admittedly I don't use unrealistic amounts of tanks so that would up the price, but I still think it would be cheaper overall :)

Ruines could be made easily from scrap. Cardboard, wood from old boxes or other materials you might get for free.
And for those that like variations: Good old LEGO stones. I kept my LEGO since childhood, very usefull.
:old

Not for Salute, but gaming at home , out of public sight, no problem.
