Using P&S Highlanders for Jacobite army

Postby sasori » Sun Dec 11, 2011 4:46 am

As the title suggests, my question is, how useable are the Highlanders from the Pike and Shotte range as the rank and file of a Jacobite army?

My guess is that the Highlanders didn't change their ways too much in the intervening years. Anyone care to comment?

I would say very useable. A Highlander is pretty much a Highlander, and we're only talking about less than a hundred years.

I would say yes for the early Jacobite wars, '15 &'19 but I don't know about the later '45 I think weapons and clothing had changed too much by then, I'm sure some of the other forum dwellers will have more info, (my gaze fixed squarely on Invisible officer!! ;) ).

I intend to do just this with my Jacobite stuff as I'm concentrating on the '19 and should just get away with it.

Well you could certainly happily get away with a smattering, especially with poorer Highlanders who would be kitted out with obsolete or inherited acoutrements. If it was me, I'd want enough Jacobites to give it an 18th century flavour, even if they were just scattered about the front ranks.

Highlander is not like Highlander. ;) There are some dress changes, nobody would have worn in '45
the leather kollet the officers in the Warlord set wear, even in '15 they are outdated for a lord and his retinue . The piper will do well.

Some of the swordsmen are very good for '45 , same with lochaber axes. But not the men with guns , they are so old fashioned, not only the arm but the amo containers and powder horns too. Perhaps if you remove them.... The man attacking with sword and pistol will do well. The one with targe and pistol should get a slight conversion of the very old lock type.
Very few archers may have been out in the beginning of the '45 campaign but would have discarded them soon. The stocks of the guns on the backs of the combination armed archers are very very obsolete. Better not for '45.
Stone throwing guys, I think no.

But the drinking men and the one lifting his skirt are a must for a Jacobite army.

I would say that your "Pike and Shot" Highlanders are NOT suitable for the '45.
For the '45 use Highlanders with musket and Bayonet.
Old Olory do suitable figures in 15mm, and Front Rank in 28mm.

Ok, so for some characters and poorer Highlanders, go for it, same for pipers and those armes with h2h weapons. But for anyone with anything resembling a uniform or gun, search elsewhere. Got it.

Thanks all.
