Nice ... weird, but nice.

Did you engrave it yet? Ask your wife about the name. It is awfully close to the tool used by the OB/GYN to examine lady parts---Speculum. Although, I can see a sort of a gory, perverse and wild interpretation on it having such a name.

I can see what you mean...But I would imagine that Speculum takes it's name from the Roman pointy spear...Spiculum for obvious reasons......One can only imagine that is what counts as medical school humour :(
it is close...but one letter out is fine by me unless engraver makes an error!

Our motivation was to Honour Bilbo Baggins' sword in Latin as best we could....because that's a really appealing idea...to me at least...and obviously Big Al !!!, as I love both Rome and Lord of the Rings!

From what little I know of BD (I've never met him and only know him through this forum) and his interests, I suspect that his good lady would have no problem with the name and would be almost as up on Roman weaponry and Latin names as he is. I do believe that she follows him on his Roman re-enactment interests, from what I gather on other posts. So I don't believe that she would have let him go with the name had she any qualms about it! ;)

If you look back on this thread, there was quite a big discussion about the name and as BD has said, it was chosen because of the Hobbit connection and Bilbo's sword "Sting". We just translated the name into Latin. You are the first person to have thought about a loosely associated name, which it isn't. Speculum means Mirror in Latin. In English it means a tool for "dilating the opening of a body cavity". A third meaning, apparently, is a bright patch of colour on the wings of certain birds like ducks. Completely different to Spiculum! Now, if the engraver was to slip and spell it incorrectly........

Are you going to have a pilum made and call it 'suppository'?

Well done Big Al.....for that..I was miles out as usual!!!!
Have you hacked my phone? ;).....strange because i don't have one!!!
But as for me,that's about the sum total of it...you've got my number ;) hahahaha....Mrs B.D. is very interested in Romans....just as well I'd be out on my ear otherwise!

@Cubster all things are possible, but I prefer the latin for "Careful Now, or you'll have someones eye out with that"
