My first Roman/s

Postby Augustus_Gaius » Wed Nov 16, 2011 10:18 pm

Hey there guys, after a massive break from war-gaming (of the GW variety) i decided to start war gaming again, now being an avid fan/ studiousness person of the Imperial roman period i decided to try find a decent maker of roman/ ancients miniatures. I obviously found warlord games and well what can i say, the miniatures are fantastic in quality, very fairly priced and just generally awesome.

Anyway after that boring prelude i would like some constructive criticism on some of the roman miniatures that i painted. As for the painting well i thought it was rather good considering i was using what i had from my pre hiatus paint collection, oh and not to mention my very long break from war gaming, anyway i just want to know what people think of them :D

so here they are (haven't yet done the shields yet i attempted to on one bloke and it went FUBAR thanks for including spares ) oh and i am (now) aware of the mistake on the feet :D and will remedy it when i can be bothered (sooooon) oh and they obviously all need a little bit of finishing off (might invest in that quick shade dip)

I will be uploading more photos later :) i really hope i havn't posted in the wrong section

Welcome Augustus Gaius! we need more Roman blood on here!
I like what i see so far, and look forward to seeing more of your romans....Might be worth wetting the shield before adding the transfer....they can be a bit tricky! It's good to have spares! ;)

thank you very much, The shield wetting tip is duly noted :)

what paints do most people use to do there miniatures, i'm used to using the citadel paints, the ones i have are in hexagonal pots with black lids, Really want to update though :') the foundation paints look like they're very useful haha  i'm quite pleased with them so far to be honest so it's all good :D

AG.......How old are those paints? You might want to toss them just on the basis of age. There are a number of good paint lines out now that are less expensive and will look just as good as your old GW pots.

Nice painting AG. Thanks for posting.

There are a variety of paint makes, I use mainly Vallejo, Games workshop, and a few humbrol. Personally I really like GW paints on the whole, and Vallejo adds a a few more colours to the range. But I know some folk don't get on with GW.

If you don't want to go all out for he army painter dip, washing the figure with GW badab black or devlan mud washes (thin them with a bit of water) gives a good effect to add depth.

You are right, the WG Romans are great, as are all of their ranges! like you I had a long break from the hobby and when I came back was delighted to discover WG ranges! :D

Have to say mainly I use Citadel paints but i also use Vallejo, and for mixing up highlights a cheaper alternative from hobby craft stores...Americana.....often not thick enough for a base coat, but very useful as i said for highlighting!
Have to say the Citadel foundation paints are fantastic.

Thanks for all the painting advice, i'll probably stick with Citadel ones, and just buy all the paints i need, then go from there, i used this paint scheme i found off of the internet, although i substituted the foundation paints with "black ink" which did an okay job i guess. thinking of doing just a grass static base to be honest, keep it simple :P

also this is quite a separate issue, but my main problem for when i used to play 40K was the lack of terrain i had :L and ability to make it, where do you guys buy materials from to build things i.e. hills? like that purple polystyrene stuff?

For the decals, I recommend Micro Set and Micro Sol. The first is applied to the surface before the decal, the second is used after application to soften the decal so it conforms to the irregularities of the surface. However, before you apply the decals be sure to give the painted shield a coat of gloss varnish and let it dry. Aslo, cut out the center where the shield boss is and trim the white edges. I do all of this with the shields still on the sprue. It makes it much easier to apply the decals. After the Micro Sol dries, do another coat of gloss varnish.
