No. It is their... instability. They change during the game just because the author said so etc.

Only bad ones change. Good rules, home grown, group grown or commercial, are clear and comprehensive. No need for changes if the original work had a solid base. Some commercials are changing with every new edition or additional books. Main advantage is that many are used to a certain set.

But I was never interested in tournaments. I play with friends for fun. I would never organise a gaming army for best results with a certain set of rules. I go for the original OOB.

Playing with unpainted miniatures would be..., I prefer paper counters if I would be forced to play without painted miniature forces. And I want the miniature to be in correct dress, with correct arms.
Sometimes it's expensive, my Thracians are only for classical armies, my Hellenistic army needs Thracians in other dress. Many gamers don't care, but I do.

BP is kind of designed to have house rules added as the situation demands. It is very rare that a rule springs into the world perfectly formed, so some sort of playing around is inevitable until everyone settles on the effect that feels right, so a rule might have to go through a few incarnations. The core rules themselves are very simple on purpose, after a single game you should pretty much know as much as you're ever likely to need to know. It is also a set designed to be played in a very informal and friendly way, so no army lists, no points values.

I don't see a problem with using different ranges for different weapons if those ranges were actual battlefield effective ranges and there is a significant difference in those ranges. I used to go along the lines of very precise ranges for different weapons but I've now come to believe that, broadly speaking, effective battlefield ranges are more to do with training and prevailing conditions than specific weapons. So, for Franco-Prussian War, then yes, different ranges for different weapons is pretty much essential, but if the difference in theoretical maximum range is only 50 or 100 yards/metres, then the effective battlefield ranges are likely to be pretty much the same - remember that we already have far more control over our model armies than real generals ever had and exploiting that 50 metre range difference would be a bit of a nonsense.

But as always, each to his own. One of the things that I do quite like about BP is the very deliberate lack of things like a groundscale and timeframe and this actively mitigates against measuring ranges down to a few yards/metres.

I do quite like the idea of range to target being dependent upon the target's formation however. I was recently reading some original late c19th British infantry training manuals and the effective ranges to targets were based around the size and formation of the target. I don't think this would work in BP, I think it would massively overcomplicate it, but it could be built into a different set of rules quite nicely I think.
Boy, it sure would be nice if we had some grenades, don't you think?

I started my army. You can find pictures of my very first element in progress In a link below.

Can You tell me if light infantry, except Rifle Brigades, were using normal "red/white) uniforms? I have enough models to paint 2 small units of light infantry/rifle brigade. I want one unit to be rifle brigade in green but I do not have an idea how should I paint second one.

Light Infantry wore Line Uniform, looking like light companies.

Love the infantry colours. I winced a bit when I saw the first picture of the colour bearers, then scrolled down to see them completed - lovely job.
