LOL. Yes, running out of ammo tends to be a bad thing.

The rules on the Empress site are a good basic starter set of rules, I use "Washing the Spears" by David Bickley, they're pretty good as they cover setting fire to buildings, stealing water supplies, boats, medics, reporters! and you can role to see how much ammo the Brits start off with if you want, also you can all be Brits as there's an auto generator process for bringing on Zulus and what they get up to. In fact the first game we played with these we were all the Brits and got wiped out, not good when you get beat by no-one :?

I have these rules too, but haven't played them yet. I have played Dave's Sudan rules, A Good Dusting, quite a lot. They're good and give some very interesting games. I like the fact that everyone can be on the same side. It allows for different commanders to act in different and unexpected ways. They aren't for small skirmish games, though!

There is a Zulu wars scenario in BP, too, for inspiration.

Working my way through Ian McKnight's Zulu Rising book, quite a good read, and despite a certain Mr. Stallard's review, only a couple of pages dedicated to the Zulu birth ritual. ;)

I also have Lt. Col. Snook's Zulu books, as well as his Sudan book published by Perry Miniatures.

So far, as much as I love the whole Zulu thing, I am thinking I might just do the Sudan, instead. AZW might be my "game too far"

On ammuniton expenditure at Rorkes Drift, this looks useful
http://www.victorianwars.com/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=645

900-600 rounds left in store, 600 rounds on soldiers and 19000 rounds used!

I played Rorke's Drift the other day using the new buildings - I'm sure there will be a write up soon in Wargames Illustrated. I don't want to give away anything that might appear in the article, so I'll skip over specific details, but I can confirm that standard BP will reproduce Rorke's Drift quite nicely. It is all down to scenario design.

The British are very hard to evict from a building that provides heavy cover - remeber that they save casualties on anything but 1 and can only be evicted if they completely break - any lesser result and they hold their ground. As Cubster said there are lots of "what ifs" to throw in too.
Boy, it sure would be nice if we had some grenades, don't you think?

I do like the answer 'So who should write them then'?

It's a free market (other than flames of War things of course, but they do own it after all), good articles go in, poor ones ... or non-existent ones ... don't. It's really as simple as that.

I cant comment on what WI was like before but I paid up for Novembers issue...first time I've bought something like that for 30 yrs +
Really enjoyed it! Pictures were great (some of the figure painting was a bit rubbish though...NOT!)
Liked it better than White Dwarf because it was looking at different games/ ideas.
It will sit in my toilet for many a year....
As for advertising...hmmmmm.....its all advertising...ideas products etc etc. We know our sins. I was rather taken with those lrdg flames of war sets. MUST resist
