Conversion of Dacian command group

Postby clivethecelt » Tue Oct 25, 2011 11:25 pm

Anyone done any work with these boys? I've chopped the standard from the bearer, so he's ready for the deer standard from the Celts command sprue, smoothed out the Dacian cap on the carynx-musician and the helm on the standard bearer, but what to do with the falx-wielder? Had anyone tried straightening the falx (falxs?) out, or is it a case of cut, drill and plant spare swords from the cmd sprue? Or had a go at converting old Decebalus?

Hi Clive. I was thinking about this set too, not bought it but have thought I might at some point to go with my Britons. I was going to dispense with the falx altogether and either craft new swords out of plasticard or use ones on the command sprue.Perhaps one of them could be cut down to a wikid long knife.

How about cutting at the wrist and replacing hand and weapon? Use one of the countless celtic hoards sitting on your bench as a sacrifice to the chieftan ;)

That is a very sensible suggestion! You could still include the Celt with one hand in you war band as a guy who lost his hand in battle but survived! You could even go Hollywood and give him some kind of weapon atatchment.

Celt with one hand

Brilliant idea! It'll have to be a silver one, though - stuff of legend! :ugeek:
I was actually thinking of converting the falx into gladii, as they're slightly shorter, if I can't straighten them - the grip on the falx that he's currently using protrude some distance below his hand, so need some trimming and shaping if I keep them as are. Not keen on the idea of replacing the whole wrist, as the minis are so well sculpted. Decebalus is particularly good, but the whole set are very crisp and clean casts.
@Carvel: The "countless hordes" will count for nothing against the newly-bolstered Roman legions, methinks. :(

Any chance of some WIP pictures??

The Stephen Lawhead Song of Albion books have long been on my "going to read one day" list.

Will do, when I've had a mess with some greenstuff on the headgear - there's not much to see at present, just a bit of knife work and filing. Don't expect anything earth-shattering, as I'm really new to modelling at this level, and it's as much experimental as anything.
Not really read any Lawhead since the original Thomas Covenant series, so I don't know any of his later work - is it good?

I don't actually know, my Bro. recommended, but I have not got round to them yet.

I read some of Lawhead's stuff years back. It seems okay for a bit of fun, but he wasn't an author that really grabbed me the way Cornwell and Iggulden did.
