Romans vs Celts, using LotR's rules???

Postby Jock73 » Fri Oct 21, 2011 7:28 pm

I'm really not into the LotR's models, But think the rules are totally awesome, I was looking at some Romans and Celts and would love to do a skirmish game with them and realised the LotR's rules would be ideal. I thought the Romans could use the rules for Minas Tirith and the Celts could perhaps be Orcs or maybe Uruk-hai for the more elite troops. It would also be a good way to get my 10 year old son into historical games, instead of sci-fi.

What do you think?

Only thing that worries me is ending up with 2 whole new armies to collect, as I doubt I will be able to stop at a box or 2 of each. ;)

What's not to like about Romans and Celts...apart from celts
Sounds like a plan to me. IMHO its not the rules but the enthusiasm for the game that counts.
Dad + boy + figures= how it should be :D

I think it'd be great - the rules are quick and simple, and it'd be FUN. It'd be very quick, so you can fit in more than one game in a session if you wanted, so you both get to play the Romans and Celts. Quick game, once the action starts it's all happening, and it's more about the fun of playing the game rather than worrying about rules.

I'd be tempted to treat Romans as Uruk-hai and Celts as Rohan myself - just do yourself a favour and ban pikes first!

I like the rules because they are so simple and my son and I can play on equal terms, without me having to play easy. Just give him more points and we are good to go.

The idea came from something I saw a few weeks back on TV. Some Romans were running from a group of Picts and the idea of a running forrest skirmish between the surviving Romans and the Picts just made my gaming juices tingle.

I know. I just started my WW2 British Platoon and already looking at my next order. Why do Warlord have to have so many beautiful models that I can't resist? It's just not fair. :P

That's an interesting idea. I will try it and see how it goes. Why ban pikes though?

This Yahoo Group: http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/LOTRvariants/ has lots of stuff on different LotR variants, including at least one for Romans versus Celts.

I suggest banning pikes mostly because neither army carried them, plus if you issue them to one army the natural tendency for that player is to form a pike phalanx and wait the game out and against an enemy drawn from a Rohan list they'll find this a very hard nut to crack!

Oh yeah! Good point. The whole point is to have a fun flowing game. Plus the whole "keeping it historically correct".
