Wargames on TV

Postby Big Al » Fri Oct 14, 2011 12:50 pm

I see that Beasts of War have launched a TV channel on Satellite. Might be worth a look. According to their website it is available in Europe on Sky channel 201 and Freesat 403. Apparently, it's on at 17:30 BST (GMT +1 hour)

It mystifies me how these guys have managed to become so popular, so popular that they even get on TV. Admittedly I haven't watched many of their little presentations but the ones I did watch were... well... rubbish. "What's in the box" is pretty much exactly that, some shakey close ups of the guy holding the various parts under the camera for a few seconds and telling you what it is (because most of the time it's hard to tell.) There are no opinions given on casting quality or sculpts beyond the word "nice" which was used about fifty times. "Nice" used to mean something back in the late 13th century (foolish or stupid as it happens) but now it's a bit of a cop out for better and more descriptive adjectives, at least according to my GCSE English teacher. A review by definition must contain an evaluation of the subject matter so you can't call what they do reviewing, it's just description. Pretty much all of their text articles are vastly better, both in content and structure. Maybe they could get the people who write them to script the presentations because the poor guy seems to be making it up as he goes along most of the time.

If I can get this new programme on freeview I might give it a watch purely to see what the format is like. I'd appreciate it if somebody who has seen it could give those of us who haven't a bit of a lowdown. Sorry for the rant but I keep seeing the BoW name bandied about all over the place at the moment and I can't see what all the fuss is about.

So yeah.. Beasts of War, very nice ;)

Point is, it's a start. Who knows things may improve. Apparently Wayland Games had something to do with the filming. You never know. If it isn't supported it will fail. We'll see. If I can get it on Freeview, I'll take a look. I know what you mean about the presentation though. It can be a bit, well, rubbish, but I don't know that I could do any better.

Rankings HQ do a 100% better Youtube presentation.

Beast of War are the stereotypical Games Workshop fanboys. Great if your into wargaming magical frogs and space leprechauns but no good for me.

I must admit I am a bit of a fan of there stuff on you tube and their website, not sure about them just being GW fanboys they seem to cover a wide range of gaming topics and makes and models. Also anything that gives this great hobby a bit of a show case wether it be on the internet or the TV can only be a good thing.

OK, so I finally got to see it.

Meh.

I certainly won't be watching it again. The presenter didn't strike a chord with me. The background music was annoying. The continual cutting into things is distracting.

It's like the whole MTV culture thing- moving cameras, continuous cuts, and annoying music just isn't my thing. Oh, and the fact that the items being "reviewed" are fantasy and sci-fi didn't really help either- but that's just me. As Clone of Undave pointed out, a review is not just holding up a sprue and saying "nice".

Hang on, now. Many us on here enjoy leprechauns and I can tell you there are none in space.

Looked at BoW and have to say the level of illiteracy, similar to BoLS, is what turned me off. Maybe a TV channel is just the thing for them, then.

I haven't been back to BoW after the shockingly badly done review of the Royalist Foote, the guy like the product but I actually found the 'review' an insult to my intelligence, I felt like billing them for the 10 minutes of my life I had lost!

LOL, that's about right. They do try to cover other stuff, they just don't do it well.

I have a couple of friends that are left over from my GW gaming days, and they do nicely send me links to BoW; always news that is about a month too old to be any good; it's like they are thinking, hey! Grant is a historical gamer. Found something for him, I should send it on. I think BoW is like that too - always too late, meaning well, but ... shoddy. 8-)
