Bit confused by SPQR???...I'm assuming you mean the banner.....or Vexillum to the Romans. Ironically that is actually Blue with a yellow (gold) Scorpion...the word Praetoria and Cohors III on....it didn't come out too well in the photo! The purple scheme i was thinking about is only a stripe/band along the edge of the white or off white tunic...i think there is a picture in Osprey's Praetorian Guard book.(very worth the money y the way.........ebay or amazon.).....My Tribune has a purple and white sash around his middle...a bit like that....a hint of purple.....purple was only worn by emperors as it was hugely expensive and rare.
All my praetorian tunics and cloaks are in Black...Highlight with two sahdes of grey............caesar has his top half in Purple and a white toga.

Not necessarily only one piece of a vexillum has ever been found it was Red, but it's like anything else an alternative colour isn't wrong, they may have used them we just don't know...Praetorian's might have had purple banners....until something comes out of the ground to prove other wise all bets are off!
Sadly no, You have to use white for the shield transfers as they are printed on clear deacal paper.....this paper has a white backing. once the white backing paper is removed they are opaque...if you put them over any colour than white that colour will show through and dull the image in the case of black virtually completely.....luckily the decals do come with instructions!

Not sure, but you might be able to utilise either of the two "White" designs on this page here (2nd and 4th from bottom)

http://www.littlebigmenstudios.com/cata ... 5ca933355e

It may need a little dab of purple paint on the shield after applying the transfer. I don't know that the transfers are transparent. If they are, then you could paint the shield white, add the purple line however you want it and then add the transfer over the top. That's the fun of converting and creating your own unit colours. :D

Afraid I don't. Those were the only ones I came across. The only other thing you could try is cutting out the design (the wings)and painting the shield, then applying the design over the top. It isn't that difficult with either a very sharp, small bladed knife or nail scissors, but it is time consuming and fiddly. I did it for serial numbers on my Bren carriers.
