Heavy weapons crew/Scorpion Battery Box set

Postby Biggus Dickus » Sun Aug 07, 2011 5:33 pm

The boxset of the Scorpion Battery has additional parts that offer people like me so many more options than the ordinary!
I needed 2 of the 3 Scorpiones for my greek Army, this gave me a few spare Roman crewmen. I showed one of those conversions in a different thread...he was converted into a Centurion.
I have finished painting all 6 of the figures....3 actual crew and 3 are being used as local protection for the various ballista/Tormenta......one is an Optio, one a Centurion and one Legionary. I have used spare Veteren shields and will make some decals/transfers for these...they will be green wreaths like my auxiliary cavalry shield blazons.

Anyway here are the pictures, hope you like, i went for what i think would be a more realistic colour for their tunics....a natural off white colour, I think most roman troops of all types would likely look like this. Red would soon go pink after all!!!!!...........I thought about this the other day, Spartans did use red cloaks.....but clearly after several washes they would go pink..........it was only recently that blue for boys, pink for girls was adopted.......it used to be Pink for boys..................perhaps because of faded spartan cloaks?....that's something to ponder at least.......

More great stuff BD! The natural colours look great. I really like the use of the veterans shields. Carvel is right this army will be great when all assembled!

Hi Allan, thanks, glad you liked conversions! it is from this set, http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Zvezda-1-72-8014-Siege-Machines-1-Catapult-Onager-Roman-/140585259252?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item20bb88d0f4 but it is a 1/72 scale version of The Tormenta Ballista that warlord produce. I have one of those too but I use this one as a lighter version...I have a book on Roman siege weapons (not to hand) but they had different size machines to fire certain weights of shot. Off the top of my head The WG version might be "half a talent" weight of shot, so i use the plastic tormenta as a quarter talent, medium/light ballista. I will need to check with my books!
I'm sure an expert will come on and correct me!! But that was my reasoning behind using it.
There was also a huge version massively scaled up version (this might be a 1 talent machine), i think Black tree make it........just change the crew for warlord! BTd are huge figures by comparison and not at all compatible. (anyway i'd like one of these one day!)

thanks cubster I'll try and remember that.

Sadly i don't seem to be able to resolve my issues with photobucket...nothing works.....javascript void message is all i get. I just updated javascript and i now seem to be logged in all the time when changing screens on here, which is something.............but sadly can't put any of my photos up due to problems with PB! it looks pretty terminal.

I'm giving up now after wasting most of the afternoon faffing with photobucket!!!
I'll try again maybe tomorrow....gutted.
