I'm having to login on each visit, which is better then each time I navigate to another page as was happening before, but still a pain.

Cookies and cache cleared - a pain to sign back into my pages of course - still no joy. Still having to sign in each time.

Hmmm OK chaps, once you have cleared your cookies etc you must close and reopen your browser. Please let me know if that doesn't work or if you have been doing that.

I have been doing that. Just for information, I'm running Safari 5.0.5 in OS X 10.5.8 on a dual G5 PowerMac...

Seems to work okay in Camino, so I'm guessing it's a Safari issue.
