Hey!! Just found some EXCELLENT info that proves black-powder was around back then!!!

According to How Stuff Works: "Fireworks originated in China some 2,000 years ago and legend has it that they were accidentally invented by a cook who mixed together charcoal, sulfur, and saltpeter -- all items commonly found in kitchens in those days."

I think that the earliest uses of gunpowder was to frighten off evil spirits. They did this by drilling little holes in a stick of bamboo and putting black powder in it which made a series of loud cracks when burnt. I think the idea of putting it in an open tube and firing a shot with it comes a lot later.

I like the idea of having the gunpowder bamboo stick like a primitive flashbang - someone tries to attack the emperor, the nearest guard chucks the gunpowder stick in the fire/brazier and the series of cracks and bangs distract the assassin for a critical while the guards overpower him and drag him off for 'questioning'!
A York! A York!

Well, to distract a guy with a dagger I would opt for a female bodyguard.
Some robe malfunction in the right moment and :o

But the gunpowder armed Custodes would be a handy explanation for the conflagration of Rome under Nero. A simple accident and  Also a good explanation for the actual condition of the domus aurea.

It's not the alien bursting through the stomach that's the really painful part, it's the school bully giving him a Chinese burn.
