Okay - I was looking at the shield transfers provided with the Roman ERI minis; I knew there was 'something' printed on them but couldn't remember so I took a better look. It appears to be 'LEGV - VIC'. I assume it would mean LEGIO V Victrix. Anyone know the story behind this designation - especially since it didn't actually exist?

There was a V Vernacula / Alaudae , a Gemina, a Macedonia, a Iovia and a Parthica.
No Victrix.

But there was a VI Victrix.

Some other units used victrix too, but all with another word like Legio XX Valeria Victrix.

Victrix just means victorious as I'm sure you are all aware!
So it would seem the legion of the shield transfer has won a battle and been awarded the name by Caesar!
Clearly regarding known history of the Legion it is a bit suspect, but it does look nice on the shields! (Does this make me blonde?)

Felix is another common legion name....but it just means Lucky......as i'm sure everyone is aware......I feel like i'm pointing out the obvious here so will shut up.........in a minute!

I was just curious if there was a 'story' behind the Legion designation. I figured there was some sort of inside joke or something - you know how the WG guys are!!!

At first I thought it was to be the LEG VI (since it was in Britain) and perhaps the 'I' was accidentally cut off in the printing process. But, as you pointed out BD - it IS very small, I had to use a magnifying glass to see it!!!

I'm already glad it's the Fifth legion that's printed on them transfers, I'd hate to paint over the number on every 90+ legionaries to change it. I'll use them as Legio V Alaudae, assume they were a bit too positive on their chances to oppose the Batavian Revolt!
Still, I also wondered why it was not the 'VI'th Legion printed on the shields, being in Britannia and all, actually Victrix as well.
