Legionaries

Postby Grignak » Sat Oct 25, 2008 1:57 pm

Hello everybody,

I'm a modeller/wargamer from Belgium.

When all the troops needed to make the basic roman army in the WAB rulebook were made available by Warlord, I decided it was time for me to try those minis.

I wasn't disappointed. It was also the occasion for me to try the “dip”, although I used a product meant to protect wood instead of a pot from “the army painter”.

The pictures of my first 16 legionaries are visible on my blog at http://grignak.blogspot.com/ (articles dated 22-25 october 2008). This is quite a basic paint job, but it was meant to see how fast I could get them painted. The text of the blog is in french, but the colour scheme is in english (GW paints for most of the colours). Anyway, if you have any questions, don't hesitate, I'll do my best to answer them.

G'day Grignak,

Those legionaries are looking very nice indeed!

It is supprising how quickly you can get them done with a bit of help from the 'dip'.

Whats next on the painting block?

Have you got plans already for a WAB army?

Cheers

Jim

Thanks ;-)

Next : another block of 16 legionaries.

For the WAB army, I'm starting with the example 1000 pts list given in the rulebook. I'll expand it from there later.

This is mostly an exercise to see if I can paint an army in two months instead of two years :-)

I agree, they look really nice.

Good luck and make sure you show plenty of pictures. Have you any Auxiliaries/ Cavalry as well?

Cheers

Legionaries

Well, the list in WAB is :

  • a mounted general
  • 16 legionaries with cmd
  • 16 legionaries with cmd
  • 5 aux cavalry
  • 10 aux infantery with leader and std
  • 10 aux archers

So, I ordered :

  • an officers bag for the general
  • a box of plastic legionaries + a legionary command bag for the 2 x 16 legionaries
  • an aux cavalry regiment (foreseeing the future here since they're 10 with cmd instead of the 5 needed)
  • an aux contubernium + command
  • a werstern archers contubernium + 2 random western archers
  • transfers for the aux shields
  • 3 sprues of bases to see what they were like.

Hint for Paul : that could make a nice bundle for WAB Laughing

After that, I'll probably get another box of plastic legionaries, so I could make 3 units of 20+. That would take me around 1500 pts, I think. The cheapest army ever Smile

G'day Grignak,

Sounds like a good plan. Are you going to do the same with some celts or just the romans at this stage? Because you have just inspired me to get my romans rounded off at a nice usable number and get about a 1000 points of celts.

I dont have any opponents at the moment but when I do i'll be ready for em.

Cheers,

If you post your army list it may well become an army deal!
