Arms and Weapons

Hello Everyone!!.

I'm a bit curious as to how you all put together your Legionary units in regard to weapons. Do all the minis in your unit have the same weapons, i.e. pila or gladii or a mix of both?

Within the cohorts of the first Legion I ever built all the minis had pila. The first rank had the pila at 'Pila Vollite' (in the throwing position) and the back three ranks had the pila at 'Pila Portate' (carry position preparing to throw).

I'm not sure if I will create my cohorts in the same manner this time or not. I might have the front rank wielding gladii instead.

By the way - my cohorts will be made up of 24 minis - 1 Centurion, 1 Signifer, 1 Cornicen & 21 Legionaries.

If I do decide to go with the same weapon for all minis, within a unit, and there are not enough to go around, would anyone out there be interested in trading arms?

You know, a 'but/Trade/Barter section, for things like this, wouldn't be a bad idea for the forum!!! Who knows, maybe the guys at WG might even produce sprues of nothing but arms!!!

I thought about this for quite some time, but have gone for mixed units in the end. I just like the way they look. My main bulk are veterans, with just 1 box of standard legionaries so I have have more gladius. I might make one unit up of entirely galdius and one of all pila.The one I have done and the one I am working on are a mix.

My plan is to aim for 6 completed units of 20 figures at the moment. So I will do 3 mixed 1 gladaii, 1 pila and the Praetorian Guards and then a support unit of 24 auxiliaries (mixed spears and gladaus) and a battery of Scorpions (4). Then a general and an Emperor, and a unit of cavalry. When all this is done I will start to think about archers & marines. And I will probbably be an old man but I digress

I note the Praetorian Guard plastic sprues are made up of mainly Pila so I will do them all with Pila when I get around to doing them.
