I've just finished the book on Brentford, a lot of stuff about Trained (Trayned) bands and Parliamentarian London, including a fantastic bit of Royalist PR aiming cannon at the city of London before the war even started! Sorry, I digress. My wife will tell you I always manage to link the ECW into any conversation!

ECW is by far and away my favourite bit of history, I have more books on it than any other in my own shelves. I find civil wars in general to be interesting - what makes people fight their own people? The Royalists should have aimed more cannons at the London Trayned Bands, I say...

I just reserved a copy of the '45 from my library!
I too favour ECW above all periods. But I bet I dont have as many books about it as you Invisible Officer ;). Used to get the partizan press notes and queries which often had lots of interesting little nuggets in them.
My sympathies probably lie more with paliamemt than the king, ultimately every ruler must be answerable to his subjects, to say I have devine right is no excuse to rule how you want. But it is obviously a very complex thing. Sorry getting way off topic...

My signature probably gives it away, but I'm with Mikeland on this one. I'm from the North East originally, so fertile Royalist recruiting grounds, but I now live in Leeds, about 5 miles away from where Thomas Fairfax was born and 30 miles from John Lambert's birthplace! I'm also a bit of a leftie so the Parliamentarians appeal a little more to my politics. You can't move for civil war places up here (Every pub and stately home round here has a story about Cromwell staying there the night before Marston Moor, he can't have got much sleep as he seemed to spend the whole night roaming the West Riding!) and battlefields (The aforementioned Marston Moor, Adwalton Moor, Seacroft Moor, Bradford, Leeds etc) and we also have the incredible Royal Armouries up here as well!
Arghh! Us ECW bods are hijacking another board!!!

I originally come from Yorkshire and it is a great place for ECW history. Though we do have the Commandry in Worcester which isn't bad. I was reading in an old ECW N&Q just the other day about a little known action in the 1st Civil War about the Battle of Tadcaster. I was a great little article with a map and everything. Sadly it was a victory for the King :( despite strong resistance from Fairfax's men.

Hmmmm perhaps we should start a new thread and leave this one alone

Well my book arrived today, and it looks rather good. Scottish rebels and such. It covers 1715 and 1745, so pretty good for the period.

I have a Yorkshire Terrier, she has been trained to hunt down rebels, chew the warts from the nose of their Christmas-cancelling leaders, and generally bite and aggravate those who deny rule by divine providence!

Is your dog called Boye? (probably not as she is a she, perhaps she is a distant relative of Boye, does she have any poodle in her? ;) )

THis thread and all the talk of a possible future Jacobite range got me interested. I checked out the '45 from my library. 100 pages in and thoroughly enjoying it.

After a three week holiday/forum break I return to 173 unread threads!
Culloden and the '45 by Jeremy Black is very good, as is 'the '45' by Christopher Duffy. I went off to the Culloden battlefield museum while on hols as well and it is very good - I'd very much recommend going if you're in the area!
