WIP hill top

Postby carvel2 » Sat Jul 30, 2011 4:52 pm

Having listened to good advice I scrounged a bit of insulating board from a friends building project.
A rectangular piece I toyed with shaping the edges down but had a brainwave to increase the size and the gentleness of the slope..
A diagonal cut throught the thickness of the board allowed a variety of 'steepness' , one big terrain feature or two smaller hills on the edge of the gaming board.
I've tried sitting my watch tower on it (without walls) and that works nicely too :D
So far its had some basic paint work to give an under colour but I'm nervous about the next grassing/vegitation step.
Any tips or suggestions welcome.

Nice hills. My advice would probably be just go for it.

Mix a couple of flocks/static grasses together in a tub, sprinkle in some coloured grit if you have some, then pva all over the hill, leaving a few patches you want bald (round the rocks, roads etc). Then liberally douse with your flock mix tap off the excess and leave to dry. At this point before it drys you can always wipe some patches Off with your finger (messy but fun!) if you want mote bald patches.

When dry I would get a very watered down PVA (atleast half and half water/pva). And paint it on in a few of the flocked areas, I would kind of dab it on. Then sprinkle these areas with just one of the original flocks you mixed. This will create a realistic mixed look but with some patches of stronger colour from the second flocking.

Then Finnish of with tufts round the stones/road edge and randomly were you want. Then add any additional foliage, rocks, painted burned match sticks for rotten burned wood.

Hope this makes sense, will post links to some of the basing materials I like.

Here are some of the products I like to use to get that beautiful base result... Because you're worth it!
My favourite base grass is the basic GW static grass or Gale Force Nine Dark Green Static Grass

Mix it with this flock:

And a bit of my favorite gravel: http://store.warlordgames.co.uk/new-bat ... 5059-p.asp

This makes a great 'summer' base mix

my bestest tufts: http://store.warlordgames.co.uk/new-bat ... 5071-p.asp

Also really good for added features: http://store.warlordgames.co.uk/new-bat ... 5071-p.asp

Good job! Very realistic static grass on your game board! ;)
