Warlord Pike & Shotte Rules

Postby SteveMorgan » Fri Jun 10, 2011 1:16 pm

Hi Everyone

I thought it would be a good idea to give you an update on the Pike & Shotte rules. The format is now going to be a stand alone rule book rather than a supplement (there was simply too much to get in a supplement and too many changes needed to get the feel for the period). The book will cover 1500-1700 concentrating on the Italian Wars, Tudor Armies,TYW, ECW and Wars of the Sun King.
Most of the writing is done, along with a load of army lists for each main conflict.
This Sunday the guys from the Nantwich Wargaming Club are coming up to Nottingham to put together the scenario part for the ECW section, and alternative history take on the Battle of Worcester. For those of you who went to Salute or Partizan, you have probably seen the amazing board those guys put together....it will be a pleasure to have that in the book.
It really is just the scenario parts of the book that need putting together now, we are still looking for help with the Sun King part, so if you know anyone with a fantastically well painted collection for the Battle of the Boyne or late 17th Century amies in general.
Thank you again to all of you out there that have given me feedback on the book so far and helped with playtesting, keep it coming.

All the Best

Sounds very exciting Steve! Very much looking forward to giving the rascally rebels a sound thrashing using the new rule book.

God save the King!

(Hope there are lots of special rules for small Scottish horses ;) .)

All right, then, this is a very good bit of news and I'm in for a copy of the book.

I can't wait to see the teasers and the nice photos they will sport! :D

Sounds very promising. Might there be any skirmish rules in the pipeline for this period too??

Can't wait for these rules :D
Please allow pike stands to have a good defense factor, which is sadly lacking in other rule sets.

Cheers

Good stuff. looking forward to this.

Have any further decisions been made about basing or how pike and shotte are regimented together?

Expect a beast that is very very similar to BP and HC, just tweaked to reflect the weapons and tactics of the period, not a complete rewrite.

If it's skirmish rules you're after I'd recommend Rev Stallard's 'WH ECW' rules, some copies of which still float around on auctions.

Having played a couple of games with some amendments to the Black Powder Napoleonic rules it appears you are going down the road of the old G Gush Renaissance rules of separate blocks of Pike and Shot.

So far as I am aware the division of Regiments of Foot into 3 blocks of pike and shot, or 1+4 (Spanish Tercio system) went out of use in the early part of the 30 Years War in favour of the Dutch or Swedish systems which basically divided the pike and shot into multiple blocks all along the line of the regiment which apparently allowed the Regiment to operate as a coherent whole.

If this is what you are intending, is it too late to change course and produce a set of Pike and Shot rules that do not perpetuate this old misconception?

@ChrisGinn
I haven't played the upcoming rules but from other forum posts in the past my understanding is that the pike and shotte are to be treated as separate blocks.

As the OP said the period covered is 1500 to 1700 and so there is need for a degree of flexibility in the basic rules to not limit them to the period of the English Civil Wars 1642-1651.

It was as you said common practice to follow the Dutch or Swedish systems but that said pike and shot units were seen fighting independently of each other at times.

By having separate units allows the commander to either deploy the units together (Dutch Swedish style) or in the Spanish Tercio style.
