Worst General of All Time

"How many of Arnie's army made it back?""There are always casualties in war, gentlemen, otherwise it wouldn't be war, just a nasty argument with lots of pushing and shoving.""How many?""Initial estimates indicate, and this is subject to review pending intelligence updates, round about...none of them."
Pardon me, Julius! Here wast thou bay'd, brave hart;
Here didst thou fall; and here thy hunters stand,
Sign'd in thy spoil, and crimson'd in thy lethe.

I think Games workshop are definitely the worst… Oh oops wrong thread…seriously I vote for Philip VI of France whose blundering leadership helped make sure Crecy was not just a defeat for the French but a disaster.

Complete catastrophe eh...I'm going with Caius Terentius Varro. AKA the guy who lost at Cannae.Anyone who can managed to be double enveloped and taken apart by an enemy army half of your size is doing something fairly special. And the clincher is that this hasn't ever happened to anyone since!

Worst General of All Time

Postby Cubster » Mon May 30, 2011 11:33 am

Cannae's example is mostly taught these days as a theoretical exercise. Most generals will try to leave an 'out' for a trapped army, on the grounds that it's more beneficial to leave a defeated enemy the option to flee than it is to trap an enemy and force them to fight. It's all down to the objective of the engagement, which is very rarely simply killing a lot of the opposition, as it was for Hannibal.
"You're a big man, but you're in bad shape. With me, it's a full time job." – Lt. Bromhead to Prince Dabulamanzi before the Battle of Rorke's Drift.

Varro's failure was put into sharp relief by his 'successor', Fabius - one of my favourite Roman generals. Bright enough to put two fingers up to the senate and not engage Hannibal, and probably more responsible for a Roman victory in the Second Punic War than any other individual.

I just thought of another one.......What was that guys name who was in charge of the union army in the early stages of the ACW? Lincoln kept giving him more men and he refused to take them into battle saying he didn't have enough!!! Mc something or other......... no, not ronald macdonald, Mclennon or something like it.He was pretty poor.
