Ultra Heavy Roman Cavalry

Postby Biggus Dickus » Wed May 25, 2011 8:17 am

Ok as you guys know, I like converting and fantasy and try and apply both to my Roman force.I get inspiration from lots of areas, Films and books amongst them. One particular Movie that sparked interest was "King Arthur" with Clive Owen.It messes arond a bit with the normal story, but sets it, I would argue in a more realistic period in history than is usual. What stood out for me was the fact that they were supposedly Sarmatian Heavy cavalry going on Cataphracts…as at the end they have have lots of barding/armour on their horses! There was 7 of them (not counting Keira) so kind of 7 samurai going on too….it's worth a look if you haven't seen it…..Mr Owen performance is a bit plank like, but it is watchable! Then going back over my osprey elite "Praetorian Guard" I noticed the Praetorian Cavalry listed as"Equites Praetorian, Equites Singulares Augusti and the Speculatores Augusti" and the colour plates (H) So I had the idea for a very heavy group of Praetorian cavalry and I wanted those lovely Hexagonal shields and the Scorpion blazons. So the idea was born, but what to do about it?A bit of scouting about and i found what i needed over at A&A miniatures (Armorum and Aquila) incidentally adding A&A shields and Scorpion blazons to Warlord Auxiliary Cavalry would work very nicely for an elite force of Praetorians should you feel the urge! So that's the story, here are the pictures…..I have also added a converted Auxiliary cavalryman and General Maximus to the group photos. The Heavy Cavalry Leader is painted as a Tribune and i am very pleased with the Standard bearer as it has a Scorpion device atop! Enjoy and let me know what you think!

Hi Dogged, yes he is but with a Warlord Auxiliary head swap!!!….and some greenstuff neck!!My auxiliary Cavalry are on here somewhere….......here we go........http://www.warlordgames.co.uk/.....f-cavalry/  but i wanted Plastic ones…..but W.F. aren't anywhere near as good sculpts as Warlord, so I changed all their heads, usd up a lot of that spare Cavalry Sports helmet which warlord put in the legionary box……they look so much better for it.

Nice ones too!Gotta say, contrary to your fears you post elsewhere, that your contributions are more than welcome! Myself, I'm working harder to build my Legio, very motivated by works such as yours or hobbyworker to name another one.So thanks and keep up with your working and posting!
