Recipes for large wargaming boards....

I'd go for 2x4' boards MDF boards, 6mm are a bit wobbly, 12mm is pretty much ideal 18mm is a bit heavy duty - they're easier to move about and store than 4' square, i've got 4 of them which rest on two 8' strips of 2x4". The whole lot breaks down and will do into the loft through the loft hatch and will go in the car really easily too.As for texture i'd get a big bag of sand from B&Q and stir it into a tin of dark brown commercial emulsion paint - dulux will mix up 2l tins of pretty much any colour you like for about £15. You mix the sand into the paint until it's the texture of thickish porridge, then stipple it onto the boards  -it takes a good 12 hours to dry but it sets like concrete! You then paint it up like a gigantic miniature base! I've used a couple of pots of Khemri brown and bleached bone to drybrush in the past  -to match my normal troopers.  Don't have pictures ATM, but i'll try to take some snaps on Monday at my club.(to give you an idea of the toughness of the boards they've been in use at the local gaming club for just over two years and would look like new with a bit of a splash of paint)Good luck with the board building -it's one of my favorite parts of the hobby!

don't worry about it, post as much as you like. I couldn't agree with you more about the warlord forums, I have found them always helpful and folk are polite and respectful. Some forums put me off because people seem to just use the Internet as a shield to mask rude behaviour but these forums avoid all that. Anyway that's enough gushing!I don't have anything to add about building boards, but I will watch with interest as one day ( especially with the pike & shotte BP coming soon) I may be tempted back to gaming.

I used polyripple to do my boards – little beads in a sort of heavy paint type stuff. Then painted that. The boards were breaking up before the paint job.But it did make the boards rough (sandpaper effect) so handle with care to avoid marking the furninture.Seehttp://www.jagclub.co.uk/hunt_nids.htm and the other stuff. Sorry this will only be available for a limited time. The JAG club has shut down.
