Macedonians-Seen the pic-Where are the figs?

Postby potter » Sat Apr 16, 2011 7:40 am

Okies, so I know it's all hands on deck over the next few weeks, but to tease us with a tiny pic of some Macedonian Phalangites on the newsletter, then to come to the websites and no sign of them...wicked wicked cruel joke.... Ok so it's really not that bad but I would like to see them soon. I've been toying with trying a new ancients army but have been wondering which way to go.I still fancy Egypt, but there's few manufacturers making decent figs in 28mm at a price thats right. The plastic Romans, I think, are ace, but there's still the idea of doing a mixed Greek/Macedonians force thats so veyr tempting... ...and whats that I hear you say? Plastic Persians......?

The Great Escape Games rulebook Clash of Empires is releasing a Greek & Persian Wars supplement in the late summer, which runs up to and including Alexander, so I guess it's a sensible choice. But I was hoping for Egyptians too.

Macedonians-Seen the pic-Where are the figs?

Mmmmmm............There are a lot of plastic greeks about at the moment!!! If you add long pikes (from WF Amazon set) to Immortal Miniatures you can have pikemen....it seems just a bit strange.....it's virtual duplication. They (I.M) are about to release a box of plastic persians, so I don't see the need for W.G to do the same.I don't think I'm going to be buying these, I have a lot of I.M. Plastic and Victrix will have a superb box of hoplites out Aug/sept time.Have to say I'm a bit underwhelmed by the choice of New Plastic Army, after a big build up,  I wasn't wishing for anything in particular, but got mildly excited about what it might be.                 I know a lot of people on here had expressed an interest in a range of different ancient armies, but i don't think anyone was expecting more Greeks/Macedonians!!!Brave step to take when i think the period is well covered and there are still gaps for plastic sets in other armies, like Romans!!!I'd be shocked if these fly off the shelves. Plastic Greek/Macedon Cavalry might have been more useful....But I have to say that is my personal take on the matter , I haven't done any market research!!!...and i have been wrong before! As for bulking out the range in resin and metal, there are even more options out there for this period already in metal, so many manufacturers. it's going to be difficult to compete with that.Us gamers want as many quality figures as we can get for our bucks......we look to plastic for that, it is expensive collecting cavalry in sizeable formations in metal........So yeah nice figures as always, just kind of shocked at the choice of army.....tell me if I'm wrong.Having said all that........................................I'd be interested in an Alexander figure with his lion's head helmet, on horse back....I have the Foundry version but it could be improved........(don't like the pose!)

WOTR are they? Funny enough, I was wondering if/when they'd bring some out for their infantry sets.

@Biggus Dickus: Not only is buying two kits to get one regiment not the best option financially, I'm also not quite sure on the result: those WF Amazon arms look rather thin. And then there probably aren't enough arms/pikes in one kit, which means several of those have to be bought to make a single IM hoplite unit into a phalanx (also leaving you with a whole bunch of rather horrible Amazon models, or so I think). My knowledge of ancient Persians is, well, pretty much absent, but I guess the IM Persians will not be suited for battles in both 500 and 300 BC (surely they looked a bit different after 200 years?), so if WG does some to counter Alexander's forces in 334 that wouldn't be a problem. What does surprise me is that WG is starting with a Macedonian range, while IM already has some normal hoplites for that period and was, to my knowledge, planning to release a Macedonian range to accompany them this very year. If WG's and IM's models look great together though.. I'm not complaining! The preview pics look promising, nice amount of helmet styles and different poses (wonder how hard it will be to give them horizontal pikes, if such arms are not to be in the kit already). I just hope this doesn't mean WG and IM are to work on similar ranges, because while having a choice in different companies is surely nice, it is only actually necessary when one of them isn't good. WG and IM both have excellent ranges and it would be a waste of time and money if they make the same kind of models, especially since history is so rich and varied.

Hi C.C……..you are of course,  right…….but my daughter has some of the amazons, they aren't great compared with WG or IM but they are the only ones available!!! So I already have some long pikes!! I do a lot of converting to fill the gaps and also to change poses etc so i get used to buying a couple of boxes to get one sometimes………..if you thought the Amazons were bad you should see the Roman cavalry!!! I had my work cut out there, but i couldn't really afford lots of metal ones!I'm with you….history is quite rich and very varied……….so it' a shame everyone does Greeks now!!….What about some Chinese? or Samurai. Or well maybe next time!!!Like you it just seems to me that WG might be treading on the toes of IM and the long and the short of it is we'd ike something else!I'm sure the Macedonians are fantastic, but they don't get me very excited…I'll just wait and see what's next.
