Hello Everyone! I could use some advice on building an opposing army for my EIR Legion. I'm not 100% sure what one I want to build yet but am leaning towards British. Then I wonder if it would be possible to build a core army, using some basic Celtic units, and throw in some British ones when I want to campaign in Britannia and some German ones when trapsing through the Rhenus Frontier. To give an idea on the size of the Legion being planned take a look here:http://www.warlordgames.co.uk/.....ri-legion/ Any thoughts and advice on size and unit make up would be appreciated. Thanks!Larry

Well for a start it will be a barbarian army, no regular organisation and that is great, I keep on telling wargamers to vary the size of their units. With your Romans being on a scale of 1:20 I suggest the old WRG scale so chariots would be on a scale of 1:8. On the poor information we have the Brits should outnumber the Romans by about 1:3 and I would vary the warband size from 20-60 so a lot of variation allowed there.British and Gallic armies very similar (my great-grandmother who was Welsh, the decendents of the ancient Britons could converse with a (French) Breton fisherman) but a bit archaic by continental standards. So chariots as mentionedhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C.....nd_Irelandperhaps also fanatics with their hair stiffened by lime-washhttp://www.warlordgames.co.uk/?p=4583Oh and not to forget (British) war dogs!Germans competely different.
You forgot to metion that while the enemy's warcries can be heard the Germans only moan that they can't get a proper schnitzel and the service is terrible.
Okay, so a ratio of 1:3, that would be ablout like the ration for the British against the Zulus. How many chariots would be good? I was thinking of 2 units of 6 chariots. Cheers,Larry

In gaming terms 12 chariots would be OK. Perhaps 14-18 would be better, allowing for some leaders in chariots. For the scale of the army (750+ infantry) then I would say 28 or so chariots would be suitable but would be far too many to game with.
zedeyejoe - 14 - 18 does sound like a good number. What would you recommend for the rest of the make up? I do like the various sizes for the warbands. The TACTICA rules suggest something along the lines of 6 warbands of 48 figures eanch and then about 10 other units (infantry & cavalry & chariots) of various sizes. I was thinking of perhaos 20 units. Advice would be appreciated. Reccomendations for a good core army would be helpful. Cheers!Larry

Well unless the figures are based in complete units, you don't have to worry about how many bases or elements there are to a unit, you just swap around as feels right. 20 units, then 20 or so command groups.
Well, I don't base them as complete units. For example, a Roman Cohort with consist of 6 bases. What rules do you use? Cheers!Larry

I mainly play WAB (WAB2 these days) but also play Warmaster (in 15/10/6mm scales). This is a game I was involved in last night using 10mm Ancient British Full battle report herehttp://cack-wargamesclub.net/i.....1007#21007
