Best rule set for ECW?

Postby Minitrol » Fri Mar 25, 2011 6:01 pm

Hi there!I really love the look of Warlord ECW sets but I have no idea what game system to use for them? Black Powder says it is for 1700+ and I don't know enough of the period to adapt this rule set but I understand the mixed formations pike et al would need a bit more detail? What does everyone enjoy playing with?I must confess again I don't have agreat handle on the period I love figures first then rules then facts LaughHaving said that I like the rules to contain the flavour of the period!WAB looks like it might work with rules for fast cavalry pistols handguns and cannons? What say you Warlordites? Andrew NZ

Best rule set for ECW?

I don't actually game so I can't comment on the various rules sets, but I do know that a Black Powder ECW supplement is apparently being play tested and is due out this year.

Best rule set for ECW?

There are a couple of nice rule systems available for fun, fast games if you can't wait for the Black Poweder supplement. The ones I'm thinking of are out of print but you can still pick them up here and there, on eBay and such. Both are written by relative unknowns who have faded away and not really done much since, the first book is called '1644' and the second is 'Warhammer English Civil War'.

Best rule set for ECW?

I haven't played 1644, but WHECW does give a good fast game, almost everyone understands the basics - which is handy and it does seem to give a game which gives a flavour of the period.

Best rule set for ECW?

I have just bought a copy of 1644 from North Star when they were selling them off . From what I have read it is a very nice ruleset wrote by Rick Priestly. It is self contained rulset with no further supplements necessary. Looking at the army lists they look fun to use and will be tailoring and building both my Scots armies to suit . What I also like about it is that you don't need a bucket of dice to play it, however you will need various counters which are photocopiable from the rules book.

All our figures are Warlord, I have completed the Parliament Eastern Association( re: Orbat for Marston Moor) and the others are steadily building up forces.(anyone suggest the best  colour to represent Hodden Grey???) The games so far using the BP rules have given a good recreation and 'feel' of the period, although Parliament Horse during this period were very poor but if used wisely can still cause the Royalist fop's a few problems!!!!!I would give BP a try(there is an ECW supplement due ASAP)Cheers Chris Minitrol said:

Best rule set for ECW?

Postby Mark » Fri May 27, 2011 10:33 am

Hi all, long time lurker but moved to post this query having seen the discussion of ECW rule sets. I already have the WAB ECW rules but given how impressed I've been with HC I'd be keen to use any BP derived ECW rules. Is there ANY hard evidence that something along these lines will be forthcoming from Warlord in the immediate future?CheersMark
