Heads up for two relevant TV programs:

Sunday 17th Aug (Today)

Ch.3 3.50pm Carry on Cleo

Tuesday 19th Aug

Ch.5 8.00pm Julius Caesar and the Druids: Revealed

Thanks to Hithero for passing this one on. So far the 'Revealed' series has been pretty good.

I've seen an advert for Tuesday's programme - the mixture of Caesar and lorica segmentata is a little worrying, but then, as far as the telly are concerned all Romans wore lorica segmentata. I hope it'll be good - the glimpse of Britons I saw looked quite inspiring.

I've already set the DVD recorder to record it, so I don't forget!

Not a fan, at all, at all, of the Carry On films, so I'm giving Carry on Cleo a wide berth.

A bit worrying for a documentary. They probably hired the Ermine Street guard to be token Romans as usual. Like all 'factual' programs you have to make your own judgement as to the accuracy and filter the facts from the fiction as best you can.

I agree that a lot of the Carry on series is rubbish (albeit classic rubbish) but there are one or two absolute gems amongst them. To my mind they are Cleo and Up the Khyber.

Well that was a bit of a let down, no idea's for rules and abilities of Druids and they kept repeating the same footage over and over. I've started book 3 of the Scarrow books now - much more informative :)

I haven't watched it yet but I am told by others that it was rather inconclusive. The Eagle Hunt's may be fiction but I think it will be of more help.

Agree with Terry on the Carry On films. I didn't see the documentary (couldn't get to a telly that day and my VHS has finally blown up - new DVD recorder due around Christmas time methinks).

I also agree with Hithero - I am a little non-plussed with all the docu-dramas around that rehash the same footage a dozen times an hour. What I want is a "dry" documentary that gives as many facts as possible with the occasional cameo from re-enactors to illustarte a point.

Still, whilst there are loadsa Simon Scarrow books around, I'll not be hard up for some Roman action.

You'll notice lots of them reprise the story so far which is in line with the shocking number of commercial breaks in US programming.

The same programme will be spliced together differently and feel disjointed to see the reprise of the story so often.
