First Attempt at dipping

Postby Aspie » Thu Sep 23, 2010 8:29 pm

Just wanted to share my first attempt at dipping, I was a little sceptical about the process, but I must say I am now a dipping convert. (Apologizes for the choice of minitaures Embarassed)

They look good. It is a pity that you didn't photograph them before you dipped them for a Before and After effect. Laugh

First Attempt at dipping

Postby Colonel White » Fri Sep 24, 2010 4:45 am

Aspie- Its nice to see that you are a convert for this product. Since I did a write up /review just over 3 years ago I use this product as I would use any tool. The only areas for some  reason the product doesn't quite cut it for me, unless someone can give me any tips, is the use on special characters /leaders.  I generally have to paint these the conventional way ie. blending, washing,  highlighting and varnishing if for gaming use. However on saying this because I save a lot of time painting rank and file troops I find I can spend more time painting characters anyway.

First Attempt at dipping

Postby sarge » Fri Sep 24, 2010 12:12 pm

I wasnt sure about the dip. I spent a lot of time painting nice figures but never finished any complete units. I started using the dip and soon had 200 bolt action ww2 28mm figures completed. Then between March and August this year I painted nearly 600 perry ACW perry figures. Two complete armies. Now I actually have completed painted armies that I can play with ,painted to an acceptable standard for war gaming purposes. I used to paint figures and never play a game because nothing was finished now I can !!

First Attempt at dipping

The more Dipped models I see the more tempted I am to start, anyone any recommendations on weather it's better to dip or paint on or is it just personal preference?

First Attempt at dipping

The more I read the more I tempted...Only a few things put me off...A)Smell...(Keep windows and doors open or better still do it outside)B)Shine (Yeah I know I can matt coat them later...even so...Embarassed)C)Possible risk of spending and not liking the product...(Err sounds like life really...Wink) Right thats quashed any doubts I may have had and I've talked myself out of not liking it.Ok, so for ECW Scots, and Parliamentarian Dragoons and troopers (buff coats) am I better off with soft or dark coats? Most figs are painted quite light colours, apart from my Covenanters, so should I be using a lighter shade?  I don't want them ending up too dark, or obscuring any of the colours too much.

Point C concerns me too, Warlord team, is there any chance you could speak to army painter about releasing a trial size pot of the three different shades so that people could try them without forking over a nearly £25? (by the time you've got the anti shine stuff)  I'd happily pay a couple of quid for a humbrol type tin for a little test! Cheers
