An interesting side note to VP day – the day the war ended Australia referred to it as “VP day”.. every other nation referred to it as “VJ day” (Victory Japan).

This was modified over the last 20 – 30 years, but I only learnt about it last year from my Partner when she was wondering why it was VJ, and not VG (Victory Germany) instead of VE day.

The 15th of August is considered to be the day the war ended in Japan (the day Japan surrendered) , but the west (generally speaking) doesn't recognise this day, instead going for the 2nd September when the surrender documents were signed on USS Missouri.

The Allied members signed the document in the wrong places, and when asked by the Japanese later that day to sign it correctly so that it would be a legal document, the Allies said 'no, as the signatories are celebrating with wine'

Edit - I just read the replies to the same post on TMP - which not only proves my point re VJ day, but also so show some uneducated replies

It used to be known as VJ Day in Australia but the political correctness hippies changed it to VP Day. It's remembered on Aug 15 here. I attended the main remembrance service at the state war memorial. Good crowd present and a lot of veterans still kicking on. But they are getting old.
