Brennos was here...

Postby Brennos » Wed Jul 16, 2008 12:35 pm

Hi all,

After having browsed through the posts a bit it seems all has already been said about those Celts.

I guess I'm just posting here as an intoduction....and to share my opinion and ask a few questions....

Celts from warlord games pros and cons (to make it nice, short and organised)

pros :

-They're actually there, and the new plastic trend makes them much cheaper than the metal ones.

-Superb sculpts. nuff said.

-Warlord Games as a company and a one-stop shop has so far demonstrated extreme promise, and treat their customers like they deserve Cool...

cons : (ok seems longer but they're mostly secondary issues really)

-Shields (has been discussed over and over, i agree with the other every-one-a-shield-obsessed history buffs) and I do find the shields a tad tinyUndecided...

-Poses and armament : dunno makes them look too much like the archetypal barbarians and i'd like them loolking more civilised, and there are too many swords as compared to spears and javelins

-They seem too "british" and the chariots coming up next do confirm this trend. It's actually not a con at all, but i put it there to protest as a more continental Gaul-obsessed frenchman...Yell (but it could be just me)

-that's all these guys are great!

As for my questions, well i'd like to know if there are plans to release Gaul cavalry, characters (not druids, which seldom saw any fighting on the Continent and are quite late comers from Britain actually) and Soldurii heavy infantry at all? (or naked warriors?Innocent)

Late continentals would have looked more ordered with a high proportion of helmets amongst the elite (few mail) decorated by plumes or animal hair and such. Commoners would probably not have longswords at all, but spears or shortswords and javelins.

Thank you for these nice boyz (oops) and looking forward for more!

Brennos

PS : is there any plan on doing other armies soon, such as .... hoplites (please please please with a cherry on top?)

Oh, show us the way to the next whisky bar, oh don't ask why, oh, don't ask why!...

yeah yeah yeah drool drool...

Please don't make the Gaesati crazed drunken barbarians, I know it would be tempting as these would probably sell well, but that would be disappointing as they were reported as more of a bunch of athletes showing off (only a few in the front ranks loosed the braies, all fine looking young men in their primes) and whose confidence had a high impact on morale of their companions and allies... So please none of that foam at the mouth bullshit... Please?Cry

Celts is the name of the people

Gaul britania ibéria or belgia are roman division of the empire.

Dont forget it. Historian find now lot's about the celtic people and now only they arent only based on the Cesar book. There were several mistake in this book of the Ceasar campaings...

Are celt nake to fight like he said?

I can say no because romans take cuirasse and helmet from the celtic army...

Are celt so barbarians?

No because they have loose human sacrifice from year -look Rome with gladiators!

Celt is a big nation coming from south russia with horses - they take command of the pre celtics people who build Carnac and Stonhedge...

hi,

quite right...

on the nude thing, celts have fought "nude" or so it was reported by mediteranean chroniclers who fought against them. When I say that, do not take it as in all the celts fought nude. In Telamon, all settled celts fought with shield, spears, javelins, helmets, and some heavy armors. A few of the mercenaries from Transalpine Gaul, however, loosed their pants and tunic, keeping only a swordbelt, thureos shield, javelins and a helmet. These were all the best looking young men from the gaesati mercenaries, and their apparent disdain for armor (which they probably did'nt own, so its just for show) greatly enhanced the morale of the other gauls and troubled the romans. Celts are credited for inventing the chainmail, most helms the later republican romans used, and Halstatt grave digs have shown that chieftains then wore bronze cuirasses...

IE: Gaesati are not naked fanatics in the wulfbyrnan/berserkr sense.

However, and especially around the roman times, all celts were not as "civilised", and the Provincia Gaul was probably pretty far from the more eastern europe tribes. (Or even the Belgiae for that matter)

Cheers

I am new to these forums but have been admiring the models (especially the celts).

Firstly I totally agree with the proposal that the Gaesatae should look like elite troops rather than blood-crazed barbarians, however some may disagree. I would also enjoy the release of some 'lower class' troops if you like, as the current models make a great retinue for the warlord but I argue they are too well armoured to represent the majority of Celts that would have been fighting.

Also whilst Brennos sees the Celts as being to British for his liking, I think the opposite. I personally want an army of ancient Britons and hence i request less armour and more flesh on show!
