big axes

Postby aysonator » Mon Feb 15, 2010 11:06 am

hi there warlord! ive recently orderd a celt starter set and the models are great and im planning to ask for more for my birth day (chariots) and i was just wandering if you now how to make celts with big axes (great weapons) or if you are planning any (that would be awsome) as in the wab book it says the celts used mostly axes and only the rich had swords so a few axes would be really nice.

so if anyone no's where to get great axes and convert them (in 2 handed pose) plz post.

I must admit your post puzzled me a little. I do not know of any ranges that have Celts with axes and I have yet to see a picture in a book with a Celt wielding an axe. I know Simon Scarrow refers to some Celts with axes in his novels but I am not sure of how common an axe is in a Celtic army.

The only company I know of that make seperate acessories like axes is Gripping Beast but I couldn't tell you if these are Dark Age axes or not as they were a more common weapon during this period and GB do make lots of Dark Age figures such as Vikings.

Hope this helpsSmile

Hey aysonator!

Glad you like the Celts mate. i have to echo the Colonel however, it was rare of the Celts to use axes, particularly big ones! We do the hound handler with hand axe but thats about it im afraid...

check those lists again ...Celts are far more likely to be using cheap and cheerful spears daggers and some swords as the man says...

A few choppy axes is perfectly acceptable however, most of us were not there after all!!

thank guys the gripping beast axes are cool may have to order some of them and ive already orderd 2 wolf and packamster kits for my birth day (in adition to the chariots). but it does say in the warhammer ancient battles rulebook that the barbarians in general used them but didn't specify at celts so mabey i just interpreted wrong but nonetheless i think a few warlord celts with huge gripping beast axes are on the way!

ps i have tryed to get a proper account (ie not a guest) but my email didn't receive as its a bit tempermental

Yep, spears are your common Gallic weapon. Useful for hunting too, so dual use.

Gaius Julius Ceasar,

loved to work with foreign cavalry,

he was quite fond of Belgian "celtic" cavalry and they were armed with javellins, short swords and yes...handaxes (small).

So I agree with John,

we werent there...If it makes your army look more handsome and it gives you pleassure...convert!!!

Wink

Cheers

Check out The Dacians warriors. I think the Warriors armed with the Falx are probably the best and simpliest figures to convert to celtic axemen.

The new Gripping Beast Vikings have plenty of axes and I have already seen a few nice conversions from gamers mixing the Vikings and Warlord Games Celts.

I hope this helps?

Cheers,

Allan
