Roman Armor/Clothing/Weapons

Postby MarcusFlaviusAquila » Thu Feb 23, 2012 3:55 am

Just thought some people would like to see this.

It made my mouth water....looking at the armor and swords. Sadly they do not seem to have the standard Scutum. Oh well.

Roman collectibles? A very big word. It's like collecting stamp reprints.

They are great for reenactment, movies and theatre. Or make nice wall decorations. But they are just similar, not the same. Many makers claim do do the swords in the old ways.

I handled many copies of British swords (and the originals) but not a single one had the same handling as the originals. Weight distribution, details of form, materials. And this with items that are made just 100 - 300 years ago.

Roman originals are not available. Anyway, I would never lend a Napoleonic reenactor one of my original British swords. So there is a big market for copies. But call them collectibles? :?

I never said they were originals or that it wasn't false advertising. I just thought it would be interesting to see.

Aye mate, the first sentence says 'We have just about everything a Roman re-enactor could want' ... I'd say that's pretty clear.
"You're a big man, but you're in bad shape. With me, it's a full time job." – Lt. Bromhead to Prince Dabulamanzi before the Battle of Rorke's Drift.

I stumble over the word "collectibles".

Originals are collectible, copies are for use. If they get damaged, no loss for human society.

Copies looking like originals. Ask wifes about jewels. Many have a very explictit view. ;)

Looking at the American civil war and western pistols, does anyone here in Blighty know what the rules are about buying these type of non firing replicas, if indeed you can? Do you have to be UKARA registered like you do if you want to buy realistic air soft hardware?
