The two books I currently own and find extremely usefull are:
Osprey Warrior 71: Roman Legionary 58BC - AD 69 by Ross Cowan
The Roman Army by Chris McNab - also an Osprey title.

I'm on the look out for Agricola and Germania by Tacitus at the moment - going to pop into town tomorrow after work and check out the local bookshops.
SPQR - Senatus Populusque Romanus
"Si vis pacem, para bellum" - If you wish for peace, prepare for war

They're readily available in various ebook formats - often for free - if you google them. If you'd rather have them in hard-copy, there are Penguin editions.

I must admit that I am pretty old-school in that repect. I would rather have the physical copy than the digital version whether it be music, books etc :D

I go for paper. Try to make a notice at a wrong translation on the monitor..... ;)
And I can be relatively sure that it is available in my book shelves as long as I live. Internet pages ..... . And CD / DVD age very fast, not to mention changing technical standards.

Mine doesn't :( They would have to order it in. They have a huge section on modern military history from about 1914 onwards, but about 2 shelves on ancient military history.
I guess I'll have a look online and see if I can find it.

Wow....thanks for all of the suggestions. I'm almost more confused now than when I started.

I didn't realise that my question would spark so much debate about the quality (or not) of so many books.

I think I'll take Paul up on his offer to pop into the warlord office and have a look at his books, they sound about the right level to begin with, (very simple - like me), and then move on to something more in depth as I progress.

I know I promised a test model too, but real life has got in the way over the past week or so, but I'm hoping to make good use of a couple of days off at the end of this week and get it finished and posted up.
