What phalangites used to look like....

I'm going to rummage in the garage tonight for a Greek army of some 30 years old. Minifigs.
It should be a pleasant reminder of how har things have come and an indication of how tempting the new Warlord phalangites are!!!!
There's some cavalry, thracians and archers. I'm quite excited

All purchased @30+ years ago, the thracians , archers, hypapists, and front ranks of phalangites painted then. The cavalry was a huge investment for a boy who never got round to painting them till 17 years ago..same with rear ranks of phalangites.
Gotta love the high gloss varnish and black outlines.
Faded sawdust bases on mounting card.
Not sure who manufactured the cavalry same company as these guys...which had a spruce up last summer...


So....when the romans are finished I think it will be time to revisit my roots and update my first ever proper army
I've nothing but nostalgia to look forward to

off topic...
in the same tin box these Hinchcliffe Russians. The first metal figures I painted, at ehe age of about 15. Using cocktail sticks for the detail.

Oh those Hinchliffe days.

I have a lot of that stuff, especially the carts and guns are still very usefull. Napoleonics, Ancients , Medieval, Colonial, ACW. Just a few, typical IO. But the men are hidden under the boxes of more modern style ones.

Sadly the officer has lost his sword...probably shattered by a French cannon ball

If you wanted to make a replacement blade I have found metal from my wife's hairgrips is very handy. Just use a diamond dust cutting disc on your mini drill to shape it, then grind away at the base of the blade to leave a thinner 'tang' about a quarter inch long. If you drill a hole into the sword hilt in the guy's hand you can then slot this 'tang' into it and glue the new blade securely in place.

I'm not allowed to touch my wifes stuff any more, hair grips / nail files/ make up, don't know if it's because she was fed up with things going missing or that time she came home and I looked like aunt sally from Worzel gummage

It' great when you find figs from your past and can spend an afternoon going back to your youth, but it's nice to see how far things have come, great shields BTW.
