Whatever takes your fancy, there's no hard and fast rule. In Hail Caesar you won't need to remove models for casualties and the frontage tends to be between 15mm and 25mm, but since it deals in units instead of individual models, there's a lot of leeway and it's the gamer's choice.

probably 5 models on a length ways base for legionaries, or as some do base all individually and put on movement trays :) hope that helps, by length ways i mean 100mmx20mm i think :L might be the other way round

Well I don't collect Romans, but AG's suggestion sounds fine to me, with a 20mm frontage that is ideal for close order infantry. Some people do like to base up on a 2x2 base though - ie. 2 models wide and 2 deep, which allows flexibility of formation changes plus a certain amount of convenience.

^^^ agree with cubster here, 2x2 is much better for column formation in HC, not square though :L but you'll probably use column much more often, however at the end of the day it's 100% up to you, individual mini's or all on one super base (haven't seen that yet :L)

I am a fan of the 2x2 as well. The victrix 40mm base packs are ideal and super affordable. I use them for everything.

Because the author and playtesters all use 28mm armies based for WAB, that is the basing system that the rules tend to work to, although they are useable with any base sizes. In WAB, infantry are based on a 20mm square base. The suggested 2 figures x 2 figures is very useful and quite flexible. This leaves you with 40 x 40mm bases and six bases per unit. Cavalry use the 25 x 50mm bases and you can base these individually or pairs. Chariots tend to be on a 40 x 80mm base. If you are a member of the Yahoo Group, Rick posted a document with the basing listed.
