Caesar let some Legionaries fight without armour as well, in dense woodland in particular.
But I am also not aware of any Legionary light infantry as such in late republican or early imperial times.
However, maybe there were some Auxiliary troops for this specific role.
So if you desperatly want to field a velites like unit simply give them a fancy tribal name and treat them as Auxiliaries.

Tacitus mentions leves armatura auxilia (excuse the probable mis-remembering of the actual latin :oops: ) and there is, IIRC, a depiction from Mainz of an unarmoured auxiliary which would fit that.

I think, to keep it within historical boundries when gaming, I'll leave the Velites off the table, but just for my own personal enjoyment I may knock a unit out to put in the display cabinet after I've built the Roman and British forces. Thanks for all the helpfull comments and quotes and advice.
