The Roman Army by Gary Brueggeman

Postby Correus » Mon Aug 29, 2011 2:11 am

Ave Omnes!!!

or anyone that has an interest in the Roman Army let me suggest the following site (some of you may already know about it):

http://www.garyb.0catch.com/

There is even an interesting depiction of a Medicus!!

Yep it is the advertising one expects with a free site.

I found it difficult to navigate but the site map at the bottom of the index page got me to where I wanted to be.

In my opinion the main problem with the Brueggeman pages is that he rarely states sources. So it's often impossible to check his (??) conclusions.
Please dont get me wrong, most of his statements are correct but I like to go back to the original. He states that he is no professional but that this is not relevant because the statements are true. But if he gives no source....

And the adverts are

It's almost as if someone providing a free service open to all those with an interest in Roman history feels they can get away without justifying themselves. Jeez, what are people to do if they don't want to take advantage of the generosity of someone of who has put in the time and research for them, completely gratis, Do it themselves?

I'm disgusted.

"Delbrück offers an alternate interpretation of the Livy legion, different from Connolly in his analysis of the Rorarii and Accensi. He works from Livy's number: ..."

That's a typical Brueggeman quote. Not naming the book or journal where he found the Delbruck informations or the exact Livius source. No footnotes at all.

I have the Delbruck Geschichte der Kriegskunst, but not every user of the website would know that he might have to search for a book of that name. And the pages?? D. wrote a lot more, including many articles in scientistic journals. The Geschichte came in three different editions. The reader has to guess what B. used.
Bad style. A student in first year would get a  for that.

The website may be gratis, sure, I would not spend a penny on a book like that.

There is a Gary Brueggemann teaching history in Minnesota, a community college. I hope that this is not the same man.

Yeah pop ups were a drag. I navigated to the page I wanted and did a select all on the text and copied it into word to read. ;)
