Legion Name

Postby Correus » Sun Aug 21, 2011 11:32 pm

Ave Omnes!

I'm kicking around for a name to give to the new Legion I'm building. Right now I'm leaning towards one of the following three, just not sure which one to go with, or perhaps another one all together.

Legio VIII Augusta
Legio X Fretensis
Legio XX Valeria Victrix

So, I thought it would be interesting to see if any of you had a suggestion and why.

Vale!

Hi Correus

FWIW My vexillatio is from Legio VI Ferrata, since I wanted to model troops based on the empire's eastern frontier. I had a choice but settled for a legion that had a long history in Judea.

Cheers

I imagine my legion to be the Legio secunda Augusta. This is for two reasons, 1. my legions are pitted against the Britons, hence I wanted an AD43 legion. and 2. There were commanded by, Vespasian, one of my favorite Roman Emperors, and in all probability they supported him in the year of the 4 emperors. (I know this is a hotly debated topic in some areas, but I stick with Tacitus and common sense, so no prolonged debate anyone... you know who you are... ;) )

But I confess I haven't done anything t the models to signify this.

I've always been partial to the Legio XII Fulminata ("armed with lightning") because I like the name. :D If I were to paint some Romans it would probably be one of the legions which saw action in Germania and Britannia, such as the Legio II Augusta.

My own Legion has the VI on the shields. With two imperial Legions numbered VI I have some freedom for use.

Legio VI Victrix (the victorious) was up to 68 in Spain, later Germania and fighting the Dacians. And under Hadrian in Britannia. Symbol was a bull

Legio VI ferrata fidelis constans (the iron one that is ever faithful) 6 in Syria, 62 fighting the Parthians, 68 Antiochia, Palestine
Symbol the she-wolf with Romulus and Remus.

As far as I know this isn't completely true. As a legion founded by Caesar it mainly used the bull as well. The wolf was kind of secondary symbol.

Hmmm, the later founded Victrix was build around a nucleus of men from Ferrata. So both had a common heritage, Later fighting for different parties, the older unit for Antonius, the younger for Octavian.

Most Caesarian Legions used the bull, for Victrix we know no other symbol. For Ferrata we know both symbols to be used.

So it might not be completely true that the "official" symbol was the she wolf but I think it very probable that they used it as a sign to be something "better". Old republican tradition,, being the older, the original.
Not totally unkown among British Regiments ;)
