It's by a Dutch painter called Lawrence Alma-Tadema who did a lot of Classical and especially Roman Imperial stuff, focussing on the opulence of wealthy lifestyles. This one's called 'Proclaiming Claudius'.

That's the one! I found the picture on Wikipedia when first reading up on praetorians.

Get Cub with the cultural knowledge.
Pardon me, Julius! Here wast thou bay'd, brave hart;
Here didst thou fall; and here thy hunters stand,
Sign'd in thy spoil, and crimson'd in thy lethe.

I've got culture just gushing from my ass.

My fave Dutch painter has got to be Pieter Bruegel (the Younger), largely because my Grandma and Grandad had a big print of his - 'Flemish Fair' - on their dining room wall and it always fascinated me.

@ Cubster -
My favourite is the painting with all of the sayings and proverbs in - really cleverly done.

Is that 'The Dutch Proverbs'? Yeah, that's by his dad, Pieter the Elder, but their style and the subject matter of their pics looks identical to me.

My favourite Brugel (the Elder one) is the slaughter of the innocents. It is depicting a biblical event, but by setting it in the dress of his day it could be any one of many terrible things man has done to man.

But my favorite painter... That's an even harder question than my favourite historical period for painting!
