Looking for a model Roman ship

Postby Froggy the Great » Wed Jul 11, 2012 8:44 pm

Now that I've made my VSF Roman army, I need transport for it. To that end, I'm looking for a model trireme/bireme/whatever that's got deck area for about 10-20 figures on US pennies, and is still small enough that I can transport it. This probably means 12-16" long.

Anyone have recommendations? I'm also trying to not break the bank on this, as I do want to afford the new Hinterland releases one of these months.

Biggus Dickus knows the answer to that. He has two! Very nice they are and I (blowing own trumpet here) named it. In fact, if you do a search you'll find the thread with the pictures on it and probably the manufacturer too. Alternatively, try sending BD a PM and ask the question. :)

I think BD got his from Grand manner (although he would have to verify that)

Zvezda make a 1/72 plastic Roman Trireme Rowing Warship (Code 8515). I am not sure how long it is, but probably about the size you are looking for.

I have not seen it but Zvezda's other products are high quality but reasonably priced.

I have seen the Zvezda one - I was thinking myself it may work with a little tweaking...and I have heard that Revell have recently released there own version but I haven't seen it yet.

Here is the link to the "Dolphinus" with some pictures,(thanks Big Al :thumbsup

it is by grand manner.....have to say a wonderful ship, being resin quite heavy.
if you check out the deck shots you'll see i get about 20 or so marines on but i would advise using square 20mm bases as you'll likely get more on deck...the deck not being curved like pennies!

i guess it really depends on how much kit bashing you intend to do.....A plastic one may be better for that purpose especially if lets say it is modelled as an air ship....but the down side to the plastic kit is you won't be able to get that many troops on it.

Either way good luck and i look forward to seeing the results! I'm off for a :coffee !!!!
hope that helps!

Thank you!

So far, the Zvezda trireme seems to be the best bet for size. I may have to wait a couple months on that, unless I find it much cheaper.
