The organization of the German Panzergrenadier Platoon was like
1 Command Team and 3 Squats each 10 men.
The majority of these platoons used 4 trucks as transports
The usually the first platoon was better equipped with used armoured carriers, 4 times a 251.
"Aufklärung" = Recon used the smaller 250 Hanomags The 250 can carry less people. Therefore a fully equipped Armoured Aufkläungs-Platoon Would have 7 carriers of Type 250. In reality such a armoured and heavy equipped Aufklärungszug (reccon-platoon) was a dangerous enemy. The platoon did have 7 machine guns, plus the 7 machine guns of the carriers. Each squad was equipped with Panzerfausts usually and on top one tank hunter team with and Panzerschrecks.
In reality the machine guns gave supporting fire for the troops when dismounting.
Your statement The usually the first platoon was better equipped with used armoured carriers, 4 times a 251 imply a mix of armoured and non armoured platoons in a company, but that was not done. In a 1944 Tank division one Regiment of Panzergreandiere was totally on lorries, the other could have SPW for both battalions but most had only one armoured battalion. An armoured unit would only use a lorry if no SPW was availabe.
The statement that Aufklärungstruppen used the SdKfz 250 is only half true. The production of the Le SPW was not enough to serve the demands. The tank division Aufklärungsabt. had 1 PzSpäh kompanie with 25 le SPW (those with 2cm turret) but all the other companies of the Abteilung (~battalion) replaced them in 1944 with the 251 m.spw
The recce Abteilung included a Panzergrenadier company that was exactly like the armoured Panzergrenadier regiments ones. The Panzeraufklärungskompanie had the same OOB, only real difference was the name.
The Abteilung had also a leichte Panzeraufklärungskompanie with 30 251SPW that was similar but had no mortars. It still could have old 250 instead but that was rarely available for that company.
The Schwere Kompanie of the Recce Abteilung had 25 251 , including 6 with mortar and 6 with 7,5 cm gun.
Not to forget the staff company with 10 SPW (normally the 251 in 1944) and 16 Panzerspähwagen (3 with 7,5cm, the rest 2cm)
But all that is paper, at the front the CO often changed the composition .
Regarding the army composition. I assume probably a reasonable level of organization to play is up to platoon, size right? An armoured platoon of Grenadiers would have 4 x 251/1 or something like 3x 251/1 and a Stummel. Can we give some reasonable "small army" examples for people wanting to play some combined arms, together with a scenario ?
Maybe interesting would be the clash between Michael Wittmann and the british? Also a thrilling late war battle was "Kampfgruppe von Boehn" versus the Americans. They had Grenadiers, Pumas, and Panthers... - but in totall a little bit to many for a number BA game.
