Moving through friends

Postby Jim Gandy » Sun Jun 10, 2012 1:11 pm

On p38 under Moving Through Friendly Units the 2nd paragraph says "Units cannot normally move though friends if they are engaged in hand-to-hand combat but may do so if moving to join the engagement either as supports or by charging."
Can anyone explain what this means?
How can you pass though friends if they are engaged in combat & thus in contact with the enemy?

As far as I can see there is no further explanation of this or a diagram in the P&S book.

However, as I had previously read HC it did not occur to me that the section you refer to on page 38 of the P&S book was not fully explained, until I saw your question.

I have assumed that it means the same as page 58 in the HC book where 'charging two onto one' is described along with an explanatory diagram.

Rather tricky to explain in words without the diagram:

AAAA
BB
CC

So if AAAA is the enemy and friends BB are already engaged then CC can charge into AAAA to end up alongside BB and in contact with AAAA. This would be impossible if CC could not interpenetrate through part of BB due to the Proximity rule. They are forbidden from sliding to the right and then charging straight forward. Ends up like:

AAAA
BBCC

Hope that makes sense?

This answer is my interpretation as the explanation appears to have been omitted from the P&S book.
